Penda didn’t check into his first game for Orlando until the second half. The second round pick has plenty of upside, but he likely will only play a small role for a contender in the East this year, making him worthy of a stash in dynasty leagues, but not much else.

After grabbing three rebounds in his summer league debut, Penda was far more active on the glass Sunday evening. He led all players with 14 boards, and the four defensive contributions were also solid. Penda has the length and athleticism to contribute at either forward spot, and that versatility may be his best path to early playing time. That said, he’s a better option for dynasty leagues than redraft leagues.

Penda was solid in his summer opener, showing off the versatility on both ends of the floor that led some to believe he could be a first-round pick. The combo forward from France was on the board for Orlando as No. 32 overall, and given lead executive Jeff Weltman’s preference for athletic forwards with plus physical tools, it’s unsurprising that Penda wound up with the Magic. Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero are the starting forwards, which limits Penda’s short-term upside, but he’ll be worth holding for the future in dynasty leagues.

Orlando traded picks 46 and 57, as well as a 2026 second-rounder and a 2027 second-rounder to the Celtics for the rights to Penda. The 6’8, 225 pound French forward played professionally for Le Mans Sarthe Basket last season where he showcased the attributes that make him attractive to NBA teams. His size gives him the ability to guard forwards, while his speed and athleticism give him the tools to handle guards. His defense is a major plus, but Penda is a quality scorer, too. He’ll bring physicality, toughness and strong two-way play to the team that drafts him. His fit in Orlando next to Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner will be an interesting one, but he should be at least a strong reserve defender, with potential to become more than that.
