Wednesday’s game included the top two picks in June’s draft. However, due to his thumb injury and being on a roster with the last two Rookie of the Year winners, Harper flew under the radar in Dallas. He had a solid night shooting the basketball, but the rookie was responsible for twice as many turnovers as assists and landed in foul trouble. With De’Aaron Fox (hamstring) unavailable, Harper won’t lack opportunities to play rotation minutes. However, San Antonio’s depth on the perimeter may limit the rookie’s fantasy ceiling for this season, especially if everyone remains relatively healthy once Fox returns.

Having undergone left thumb surgery in early September, Harper made his preseason debut Friday night. The southpaw shot the ball well and did not suffer any setbacks, making the second overall pick’s first live action of the preseason a success. Harper was under a minutes restriction, resulting in him playing 18 minutes off the bench. With De’Aaron Fox (hamstring) expected to miss the start of the regular season, Harper will have increased fantasy value early on.

The second overall pick in June’s draft, Harper underwent left thumb surgery in early September. It was initially reported that the Spurs were aiming for the rookie guard to be healthy in time for the October 22 regular season opener, but he’s beaten that projection by just under two weeks. With De’Aaron Fox (hamstring) unlikely to be ready for the start of the regular season, Harper may be able to hit the ground running from a fantasy standpoint. He will be under a minutes restriction on Friday.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Harper suffered the injury during a workout on Wednesday. The hope is that the second overall pick in this summer’s draft will be fully healthy in time for San Antonio’s October 22 season opener against the Mavericks. The Spurs have good depth on the perimeter, led by De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell, so they’ll have the pieces needed to account for Harper’s absence if he is not ready for the season opener. He should be one of the top rookies in fantasy basketball next season, so Harper’s recovery is something that fantasy managers should continue to track ahead of their league drafts.

Harper only appeared in two games after dealing with a groin injury, and he played a total of 42 minutes across his appearances. He clearly didn’t need to be out there, and the Spurs decided it wasn’t worth risking further injury. David Jones-Garcia should return to the starting lineup as he continued to make a case of Summer League MVP.

Harper struggled with inefficient play on Monday, shooting well below 50 percent from the field and committing five turnovers. However, his layup with 4.1 seconds remaining in regulation forced overtime, with a Riley Minix turnaround at the buzzer giving San Antonio the win. More important than Harper’s stats was the increase in playing time, as he logged 25 minutes after playing 17 on Saturday. That’s a sign the groin injury that sidelined him for the start of summer league has not been an issue.

Due to a groin injury, Harper did not play in San Antonio’s first four games of the summer. The second overall pick in last month’s draft was cleared to debut on Saturday, albeit under a restriction of 20 minutes. Harper logged 17 minutes against top overall pick Cooper Flagg and provided solid value across the board. The former Rutgers star missed all four of his three-point attempts, but that can be chalked up to rust rather than him being a suspect shooter. Harper will join a crowded perimeter rotation next season, which may limit his immediate fantasy prospects. However, the offensive versatility should make him a threat at multiple positions as he shakes off the rust.

Harper suffered a minor groin injury before the California Classic and did not play in San Antonio’s three games in San Francisco. While he will also miss Thursday’s opening game in Las Vegas against the 76ers, the second overall pick in last month’s draft will reportedly make his summer debut on Saturday against the Mavericks. Fans and fantasy managers have seen San Antonio’s other first-round pick, as Carter Bryant played in two of the team’s three games in San Francisco.

Cardwell has been an important piece for Auburn and will now be the second center that Sacramento added on draft night after they selected Maxime Raynaud in the second round. Cardwell couldn’t be a more different player from Raynaud. He finished in the paint well, but most of his impact was made on the defensive end. He’s also a decent passer for a big, even if the numbers don’t reflect it. He’ll compete to earn a spot in Sacramento, starting in Summer League in a couple weeks.

The consensus No. 2 player in this class, Harper has a chance to be a special point guard for a long time. The 6’6” lefty is a crafty, strong ball handler that can score inside and out and can find his teammates for open looks. He averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.7 three-pointers per game for Rutgers last season. He wasn’t a standout defender in college, but the 1.4 steals per game, with a steal percentage of 2.6, were both encouraging, and he could be a solid source of steals in the NBA, especially with a 6’10.5” wingspan. However, his offensive game is why he was drafted this early. He’s a smart, physical guard that finished well at the rim and is one of the best passers in the draft. How he’ll fit alongside De’Aaron Fox and reigning ROY Steph Castle remains to be seen, but San Antonio has a great problem on its hands with such a talented backcourt.
