Braves transferred LHP Chris Sale to the 60-day injured list.

The procedural move takes Sale out of Atlanta’s rotation plans until at least the second half of August. The 36-year-old southpaw was in the midst of another Cy Young Award-caliber season before suffering a fractured left rib cage during a June 18 masterpiece against the Mets when he made a diving play to rob Juan Soto of an infield hit. The widely-held expectation is that he’ll pitch again this season, but there won’t be a definitive return timeline until his rib fracture heals to the point that he can resume throwing again.

Spencer Schwellenbach told reporters he thinks that his recent increased velocity might’ve caused the fracture in his elbow.

It’s a concerning development that fantasy managers should keep in mind when evaluating pitchers that show up to future spring training’s with significant velocity upticks. The 25-year-old has been diagnosed with a fractured right elbow and won’t be able to resume throwing until it heals completely. He’s hoping to pitch again this season, but that sounds like an extreme long shot.
