Smith has been on a heater this month, batting .321 (18-for-56) with two homers, 10 RBI and one steal over his last 15 games to earn a shot in the middle of Houston’s lineup with Isaac Paredes and Yainer Diaz getting a breather during Sunday’s series finale in Los Angeles.

Walter had allowed a total of three runs in his first three starts in the majors. He gave up four in the first two frames Saturday, and struggled for the overwhelming majority of the outing. The 28-year-old was due for some regression, but it’s disappointing he regressed this hard. Walter will get a chance to rebound Friday, but it’ll be tough sledding against the power-hitting Cubs’ lineup.

McCullers is scheduled to throw again Sunday, and if that goes well, the 31-year-old could throw off the mound Monday. The hope is that McCullers will only miss the minimum amount of time on the injured list, so he could be back on the bump before the end of next week.

Caratini came up against Mason Miller with a pair of runners on base, and launched his sixth homer of the year to tie the game at 4-4. He went hitless with three strikeouts in his other at-bats, but fantasy managers will take three-run homer games regardless of the other results. Caratini had just three hits in his first 10 games of June, but six in three games for this series against the Athletics.

It appears to be a routine off day for Hernández with Andy Pages moving over to right field and Hyeseong Kim patrolling center field. The other notable change for Los Angeles is rookie Dalton Rushing handling the catching duties with Will Smith getting a well-deserved day off.

Not good. Carroll remains on the bench as he continues to recover from a left hand contusion that he suffered earlier this week on Wednesday when he was hit by a pitch. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters the 24-year-old will undergo an MRI on Monday in Chicago to determine whether he’s dealing with any structural damage. The fact that he hasn’t been put on the injured list is an encouraging sign as it appears the organization is merely proceeding with an abundance of caution by giving their franchise cornerstone some extra time off to rest and recover. Hopefully he’ll be ready to return for Monday’s series opener against the White Sox, assuming the MRI comes back clean.
