Smith singled three times on a night where Houston picked up 16 hits and six different Astros had multi-hit nights. The rookie 22-year-old is now hitting .285 on the season, and his OPS has risen to .785. Smith hit .303/.354/.494 in June, and July has seen a pair of multi-hit games. Pretty good.

Sousa gave up three hits with no walks, and he struck out one. The run didn’t really matter in terms of Houston winning the game or the 30-year-old picking up his third save, but it did push his ERA up to 1.95; a number that you’ll still happily sign up for. Sousa isn’t likely to see more save chances, but it’s not out of the question he’d get more chances if something were to happen to Josh Hader.

Brown allowed a two-run homer to Mickey Moniak in the second inning, and that was it. Because of the opponent and because of how good Brown has been in 2025, this almost feels “disappointing,” but that’s much more compliment to him than insult to this outing. He still has a 9-3 record and 1.82 ERA, and he’s been one of the very best starters in 2025; showing this second half in 2024 was no fluke. He’ll look to keep the good run going against the Guardians on Monday.

Short receives the call to replace an injured Luis Guillorme (hamstring) on Houston’s bench ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Rockies at Coors Field. The 30-year-old infielder bounced around last year, getting into 42 games between the Mets, Red Sox and Braves.

Rosenthal mentions that the limited number of right-handed hitters on the trade market could make García an attractive option, especially since he’s under team control next season as well. With the Rangers falling out of contention, García could be the team’s most valuable trade chip. Rosenthal believes that, “As long as he continues producing offensively, his trade value would be greater at the deadline than during the offseason or at next year’s deadline.”

The Jays scored seven runs in the first and led 8-0 after four, only to watch the Yankees come all of the way back and tie the game at 9-9 in the top of the eighth. Barger’s fourth RBI came as part of a two-run bottom of the eighth in which the go-ahead run scored on a wild pitch. Barger now has 10 homers and an .818 OPS in 229 plate appearances this season. He had seven homers and a .601 OPS in 225 plate appearances as a rookie last year.

O’Neill has had a rough go this season in his Orioles debut, but he’ll try to turn the page as the calendar flips to the second half. The 30-year-old slugging corner outfielder has been out since mid-May recovering from a shoulder impingement.
