It’s good that Marte is playing after spring his first three games on the bench. It seems odd to have Encarnacion-Strand on the bench against a lefty, but he actually has hit righties better to date in his major league career, even if it’s probably a fluke. Encarnacion-Strand is in a 4-for-41 slump after going 4-for-8 in his first two games of the season. Of course, the entire Reds team is hitting .203 right now. Their only healthy players with .700 OPSs this season are their two catchers: Jose Trevino (.773) and Austin Wynns (.879 in 12 PA).

It was a surprise to see Pagán enter with a 6-4 lead in the eight; it’s just the third time this season that he’s come in before the ninth. He was up against the bottom of the Tigers’ lineup, too, so it wasn’t a case of using the best pitcher against the heart of the order. After Pagán exited, the Reds scored twice more in the ninth, taking away the save situation. Tony Santillan came on and struck out two of the four batters he faced in the ninth. Santillan has been very good, but Pagan, who last blew a save on May 6, hasn’t had any missteps in the closer’s role, and Terry Francona isn’t typically the type to mix and match. It seems like a situation to watch.

Batting in the No. 2 spot in the order Sunday, McClain managed two hits and two runs scored in the win over the Tigers. The 25-year-old second baseman is still hitting just .191 on the season, but appears to be making some positive strides at the plate so far in June. Reclaiming a regular spot in the top third of the batting order would go a long way for his fantasy value over the rest of the season.

De La Cruz’s home run was his 16th of the year. After the Reds came back to take the lead late in the game, the 23-year-old shortstop extended the lead to 8-4 with a two-run shot off Brennan Hanifee in the top of the ninth inning. De La Cruz is on a hot streak with home runs in each of his last four games. He’s hitting .273 with an .850 OPS and 50 RBI this season.

Horwitz opened the scoring in the top half of the first inning with an RBI single off of right-hander Colin Rea. He also singled with two outs in the sixth inning but the Pirates were unable to cash him in. With his two-hit attack, the 27-year-old first baseman is now hitting .227/.299/.330 with one long ball and seven RBI.

The Brewers targeted Contreras after what must have been a brain fart caused him to back into the running lane while Caleb Durbin was coming down the line. The 5-foot-7 Durbin ran into Contreras’s backside and went flying, but he wasn’t seriously hurt and was able to stay in the game. It also probably didn’t help that Rhys Hoskins was hit by a pitch afterwards. Jose Quintana plunked Contreras in the upper arm in his next at-bat, at which point Contreras, who seemed fine with the whole thing, retrieved the ball and handed it back to the pitcher. Also fun: both William and Willson wound up trading solo homers in the ninth inning today, making it the first time the brothers have homered in the same game.
