The Tigers trailed 4-0 heading to the fifth inning where they were able to scratch out two runs off of Paul Skenes. They then put a man on in the seventh inning when Keith somehow clobbered an 0-2 Isaac Matson fastball that was nearly a foot above the strike zone for an opposite-field game-tying 353-foot (93.3 mph EV) two-run shot. Per the venerable Sarah Langs of MLB.com, at 4.22 feet above the ground, it’s the second highest pitch that anyone has hit for a home run this season, and the highest pitch that any Tiger has hit for a home run since pitch tracking began in 2008. Keith also drew a walk in the contest and reached on a fielder’s choice and scored a run in the fifth inning. The 23-year-old infielder finished the night 1-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and two RBI and is now hitting .247/.338/.400 with five homers and 22 RBI on the season.

Smith was with the team as the 27th man for Thursday’s doubleheader against the Pirates, but he’ll stick around as an extra bullpen arm with Keider Montero getting optioned to Triple-A instead. He’ll give manager A.J. Hinch another weapon to deploy in the middle innings.

Montero was terrific in a no-decision against the Pirates during the second game of Thursday’s doubleheader, giving up just one run on three hits over five innings. The Tigers needed a fresh arm for their bullpen on Friday which is why Montero was sent down. Expect him to return in short order the next time the team requires an extra starter.

McKinstry started both games of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Pirates, so he has certainly earned a night off. Colt Keith will make his second consecutive start at third base and will bat leadoff for the Tigers on Friday evening against Rays’ right-hander Shane Baz.

As expected, Campbell is down after scuffling mightily since the start of May. The 22-year-old will get a chance to work on some things in Triple-A, and he’ll be replaced on the active roster by Wilyer Abreu with Abreu coming off the injured list as the corresponding transaction.

Stott singled with two outs in the second inning, but was then cut down attempting to steal second base. He then drew a walk in the fifth inning before plating the game-tying run with a fielder’s choice in the seventh. Stott also reached on an infield single in the ninth inning. With his two-hit attack, the 27-year-old second baseman is now hitting .242/.309/.344 with five homers, 31 RBI and 12 swipes on the season.
