McKinstry started both games of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Pirates, so he has certainly earned a night off. Colt Keith will make his second consecutive start at third base and will bat leadoff for the Tigers on Friday evening against Rays’ right-hander Shane Baz.

Smith was with the team as the 27th man for Thursday’s doubleheader against the Pirates, but he’ll stick around as an extra bullpen arm with Keider Montero getting optioned to Triple-A instead. He’ll give manager A.J. Hinch another weapon to deploy in the middle innings.

Montero was terrific in a no-decision against the Pirates during the second game of Thursday’s doubleheader, giving up just one run on three hits over five innings. The Tigers needed a fresh arm for their bullpen on Friday which is why Montero was sent down. Expect him to return in short order the next time the team requires an extra starter.

Polanco’s first 24 games were so ridiculously good that he still has around a 120 OPS+ for the season. However, since May 4, he’s batting .170/.221/.240 in 140 plate appearances. Hopefully, anyone that picked him up early dropped him long ago.

Polanco turned on an offering from Kolby Allard to give the Mariners a 6-2 lead. It’s the 11th homer of the season, and it’s encouraging to see him drive the ball from the right side after struggling — and at times not playing — against southpaws in 2025. Polanco is now hitting .266/.312/.464 on the season with 33 RBI. The majority of that damage was done much earlier in the year, however, as he’s hit just two homers since the start of May.

Polanco has been limited to designated hitter duties for the majority of the 2025 campaign, and while he was signed to play third for the Mariners this offseason, the 31-year-old will handle his ‘old’ position for Wednesday’s finale in Arizona. Dylan Moore is in right field, and Cole Young opens the contest on the bench.
