With some of the more obvious candidates opting out, there might be another non-All-Star or two in the mix for Derby spots. Cruz, who has 15 homers this year, is a fun pick with the ability to launch balls as far as anyone. He leads the majors with an average exit velocity of 96.1 mph, and his 122.9 mph home run on May 25 was the hardest ball hit in the league this year.

The story largely remains the same for Suwinski. He boasts impressive raw power potential, but continues to strike out at astronomical rates, which eliminates any shot of him emerging as an everyday player at the highest level. The 26-year-old slugging outfielder joins Pittsburgh’s bench mx ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Royals after putting up 12 homers in 53 games this season at the Triple-A level. He’ll continue to get chances, but he’ll need to cut back on the strikeouts to make it in the big leagues.

No word yet on how much time Shugart is going to miss. The 28-year-old righty has registered a solid 3.69 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 22/15 K/BB ratio across 39 innings (32 appearances) this season in his Pirates debut.

Heaney’s velocity has been down all year, but at least he’s been consistent; he’d averaged in between 89.8 and 90.5 mph with his fastball every start until tonight, when he was down to 89.5 mph despite not pitching very deep into the game. His slider was actually down 1.8 mph from his season average. It seems like bad news for a pitcher the Pirates are certainly planning to trade later this month. Heaney dropped to 4-8 with a 4.41 ERA. He’ll likely face the Twins on Sunday.

Meyers will sit out his second straight game on Tuesday night as he nurses a right calf issue. There’s no real reason for Houston to rush their starting center fielder back this week and risk the issue getting worse so they’ll continue rolling with Taylor Trammell in his place.

Outman gets the call to replace an injured Enrique Hernández (elbow) on the Dodgers’ active roster prior to Monday’s series opener against the Brewers. The 28-year-old center fielder has hit .125 (3-for-24) with two homers in nine games this season at the major-league level.

Meyers appears likely to avoid the injured list for now after exiting Sunday’s game against the Dodgers with right calf tightness. The 29-year-old center fielder is day-to-day for now. It’ll be rookie Kenedy Corona taking over in center field in his absence.
