Valdez was exceptional against the Mariners last week. He was less-than-spectacular Monday, It’s worth noting that five over the 10 hits he allowed went for extra bases, and he struck out just three while landing 55-of-89 pitches for strikes. Valdez has alternated clunkers with scoreless outings to open 2025, and he’ll hope to do the same after this poor outing against the Padres on Saturday.

Both Gusto and Mitch Spence held their opponents to a single run in this contest, so both come away without their deserved victories. The only run Gusto gave up was a solo homer to JJ Bleday, and outside of that he allowed just two other hits and one walk in one of his best starts in the majors. Gusto will look to build on this outing and continue to lower a 4.31 ERA against the Angels over the weekend.

Espada added that McCullers suffered the injury on Saturday during a “freak accident” in the club’s weight room. The 31-year-old is dealing with a sprain above his big toe and isn’t expected to require a lengthy absence. It’ll be Ryan Gusto taking the ball on Monday night against the Athletics in his place with Jason Alexander coming up to fill his rotation spot on Tuesday evening.
