Taillon allowed three hits in the contest, and he issued one free pass while firing 63-of-89 pitches for strikes. He gave up a solo homer to Fernando Tatis Jr., but he limited the hard contact for most of the contest in a solid outing against a competent San Diego lineup. Taillon still has a 5.40 ERA, but he’s pitched better than those numbers after his ugly first start of the campaign. He’ll face the Diamondbacks next weekend.

Happ helped to get the scoring started for the Cubs as he worked a leadoff walk to begin the first inning, swiped second base and scored on a ground out off the bat of Seiya Suzuki. He then played the role of hero in the 10th, smacking a David Bednar offering into right field to plate Vidal Brujan from third base with the game-winning run. The 30-year-old outfielder is now hitting .249/.340/.385 with seven long balls, 31 RBI and four stolen bases on the season.

Flexen came on to start the 10th inning and stranded the extra runner at second base, getting Ke’Bryan Hayes on a ground ball to shortstop, Henry Davis on a line drive to right field and Isiah Kiner-Falefa on a liner to second. He then became the beneficiary as the Cubs walked it off in the home half of the frame. The 30-year-old right-hander has been a cheat code out of the Cubs’ bullpen this season, hurling 18 1/3 scoreless innings with a 0.82 WHIP and a 10/5 K/BB ratio to go with four wins and a save through his first 11 appearances.
