Báez has shouldered a heavy workload for the Tigers this season and made a couple of rare gaffes in the field on Thursday evening, so manager A.J. Hinch will give him a breather to reset. Zach McKinstry will slide over and cover shortstop and bat sixth for the Tigers against Guardians’ right-hander Slade Cecconi.

It was a short stint for Malloy in the majors, as he was just recalled Wednesday. He’ll head back to Toledo with Reese Olson (finger) activated off the injured list. Malloy will be back at some point this summer.

Olson is activated and will start Friday’s game against the Guardians. The 25-year-old will be making his first appearance sins May 17, but he’s been an effective option when healthy with a 2.96 ERA through 48 2/3 innings over nine starts.

Torkelson gave the Tigers an early advantage in this one, winning a 10-pitch battle against Jake Irvin by clobbering a 428-foot (104.7 mph EV) three-run shot in the top half of the first inning. That would be his lone hit in four at-bats on the night. For the season, the 25-year-old slugger is now hitting .234/.335/.492 with 19 long balls and 55 RBI.

Suárez got Arizona on the board with a solo homer off Robbie Ray in the fourth inning. Former Mariner on former Mariner crime. The 33-year-old continues to pile up the roundtrippers, as he’s up to 27 on the season with a slugging percentage of .561. The question is what team Suárez is playing for at the end of the month.

On a night where both starters and both team’s bullpens were brilliant, the Cubs finally broke through and put a run up in the home half of the 10th inning. Michael Busch started it with a ground out to shortstop that advanced Nico Hoerner to third base. Shaw then followed by smacking a 1-0 cutter deep enough into center field to bring home the game’s only run. He finished the night 0-for-3 and is hitting just .218/.299/.309 with two homers, 14 RBI and 10 stolen bases in what has been a disappointing rookie campaign for the 23-year-old third baseman.
