On a night where both starters and both team’s bullpens were brilliant, the Cubs finally broke through and put a run up in the home half of the 10th inning. Michael Busch started it with a ground out to shortstop that advanced Nico Hoerner to third base. Shaw then followed by smacking a 1-0 cutter deep enough into center field to bring home the game’s only run. He finished the night 0-for-3 and is hitting just .218/.299/.309 with two homers, 14 RBI and 10 stolen bases in what has been a disappointing rookie campaign for the 23-year-old third baseman.

Busch homered in each of his first two at-bats off Miles Mikolas as the Cubs set a franchise record with eight long balls. Seven of them were hit in the first three innings and Busch’s first two were absolutely crushed. They combined to travel 836 feet and each came against fastballs that were grooved right down the middle. Then, he hit a cheapie in the seventh inning off John King, but never got another plate appearance for a chance at what would’ve been a historic fourth homer. All four of his batted balls were hit at least 103 mph and he’s quietly been one of the best hitters in the National League to this point with 19 home runs, 59 RBI, and a .919 OPS. Overall, this has been an incredible breakout season for the 27-year-old first baseman.

As the Cubs lineup knocked in seven runs with six homers over the first three innings of this game, Rea retired the first nine batters he faced. Literally the only blemish on his line was a solo home run by Brendan Donovan to start the fourth inning. Otherwise, he artfully worked the edges of the zone with his fastball and sinker to force plenty of soft contact. He’s lined up to face the Twins next week in his last start before the All-Star break.

Taillon is expected to miss at least a month with the injury, making him very droppable in mixed leagues. The veteran right-hander is 7-6 with a 4.44 ERA in 17 starts this season. The Cubs said they’ll use a bullpen game to replace him Saturday, but they did recall Jordan Wicks, who could ultimately take the open rotation spot.

Báez has shouldered a heavy workload for the Tigers this season and made a couple of rare gaffes in the field on Thursday evening, so manager A.J. Hinch will give him a breather to reset. Zach McKinstry will slide over and cover shortstop and bat sixth for the Tigers against Guardians’ right-hander Slade Cecconi.

Suárez got Arizona on the board with a solo homer off Robbie Ray in the fourth inning. Former Mariner on former Mariner crime. The 33-year-old continues to pile up the roundtrippers, as he’s up to 27 on the season with a slugging percentage of .561. The question is what team Suárez is playing for at the end of the month.
