    Kristian Campbell

    Kristian Campbell

    BOS • 2B • #

Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that the Red Sox are demoting Kristian Campbell to Triple-A Worcester.

As Passan notes, Campbell has struggled mightily since the start of May with a slash of .159/.243/.222 in that timeframe. The 22-year-old offers considerable offensive upside and Boston obviously isn’t giving up on a player they signed to a $60 million contract extension, but fantasy managers should be looking for upgrades if they haven’t already. A corresponding move should be announced shortly.

    Kyle Harrison

Red Sox Triple-A pitching coach Dan DeLucia said that Kyle Harrison is working on adding a cutter and highlighting his sinker more.

Harrison will be throwing a bullpen on Saturday, and DeLucia was open about what the team is hoping to work with him on. “He has a sinker he’s been working on in the background in San Francisco. He’s going to showcase that, and then we’re working on a cutter variation. Another pitch to take pressure off the fastball.” Harrison has an elite four-seamer, so adding secondary pitches to support that would be a huge development for him. He’s going to remain in Triple-A for a few weeks while Boston continues to work on these pitch mix changes.

    Injury

Tanner Houck (forearm) allowed one run in his lone inning of work on Wednesday in a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Worcester.

Houck was lifted after issuing a leadoff walk in the second inning after throwing 32 pitches (18 strikes) in his rehab debut. The 28-year-old righty will need a couple additional outings to continue building up his stamina and pitch count before returning to Boston’s rotation. He’s been out since mid-May due to a forearm flexor strain.

    Marcelo Mayer

    Recap

Marcelo Mayer homered, walked and scored twice as the Red Sox topped the Mariners 3-1 on Wednesday.

That Mayer has fanned 20 times in 65 plate appearances isn’t what anyone wants to see, but he’s punishing the ball when he makes contact. The homer today was his fourth in 65 plate appearances, and his current 60% hard-hit rate is third in the majors among players with 50 plate appearances, leaving him behind only Shohei Ohtani and, of course, Luis Torrens.

    Recap

Gleyber Torres went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI as the Tigers topped the Pirates 9-2 in the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader.

Torres had one of the Tigers’ four sac flies today. He’s hitting .281/.380/.424 this season, and he seems like a strong candidate to make the AL All-Star team after a long absence. He was picked for the Midsummer Classic in each of his first two seasons in 2018 and ’19, but he hasn’t gone to one since.

The Mets are optimistic about Brett Baty’s (groin) availability for Thursday night’s showdown against the Braves.

The 25-year-old infielder has missed each of the team’s last two games due to a groin injury. He’ll be put through a battery of drills before Thursday’s game which will determine whether or not he’ll be available off of the Mets’ bench. Fortunately, it sounds like he has turned a corner in his recovery and will not require a trip to the injured list.

    Recap

Marcus Semien went 1-for-4 with an RBI double on Thursday in a loss to the Royals.

Semien’s run-scoring double off Royals veteran starter Michael Wacha represented the lone extra-base hit for Texas in a low-scoring affair at Globe Life Field. The 34-year-old second baseman has shaken off a glacial start to the season at the dish, hitting .304 (31-for-102) with four homers, 14 RBI and five steals over his last 30 games.
