Candelario got on the board with his first-inning blast off Bailey Falter. He had just one previous extra-base hit while batting .140/.208/.162 in 12 games. A corner infielder playing 81 games per year in GABP wouldn’t need to be very good in order to generate some mixed-league value, but Candelario has still fallen short of the standard since lancing a three-year, $45 million deal prior to last season. He’s probably not hopeless, but nothing so far this year has been very encouraging.

Stephenson’s slam off Jack Flaherty in the fifth was the second of his career. He struggled in his first 15 games after coming off the injured list at the beginning of May, but he’s hit .329 with five homers, five doubles and 17 RBI in his last 18 games. The Reds seem a little more hesitant to use Stephenson at DH now that they’ve shed their third catcher by moving on from Austin Wynns, so he was out of the starting lineup entirely on Sunday and Wednesday. He did DH with Jose Trevino catching today, though.

Singer got through six for just the second time in his last seven starts. Still, the quicker hooks have been working for him. It just wasn’t necessary today with the Reds giving him seven runs to work with. Singer is 7-4 with a 4.34 ERA and a 60/32 K/BB in 74 2/3 innings. He’s set to face the Cardinals next time out.

If it wasn’t a rout already, McLain made it one by increasing the Reds’ lead from six runs to nine against John Brebbia in the eighth. He’s batting .229/.325/.439 with two homers and seven RBI in 11 games this month. It’s not great, but it’s a big improvement over his April and May.

Suárez mashed his 20th homer of the season in the fourth inning to give the Diamondbacks a 3-1 lead. The 33-year-old also drew a walk to improve his slash to .231/.307/.518 along with 55 RBI over 70 games.

The homer makes it a good day, of course, but it was a 345-foot fly to left that was only a homer in one major league ballpark and probably a hit in just one other (it’d have gone off the Green Monster in Fenway). Lee struck out in his other three at-bats. He has been performing well on the whole lately, though; he’s batting .341/.372/.537 in 12 games this month.

Smith drew a walk in the first inning, then doubled to lead off the fifth before scoring on a double by Corey Seager. Smith knocked another double in the eighth and scored his second run on a throwing error. The versatile 27-year-old is having a solid season for the Rangers, hitting .287/.354/.444 with seven homers, 31 runs scored, 20 RBI, and eight steals across 241 plate appearances.
