Nootbaar set the table beautifully in this one, reaching safely in all three of his plate appearances against Aaron Nola. He is totally locked in right now in terms of pitch selection and has a .403 on-base percentage in what’s now been two straight weeks atop the Cardinals’ lineup. It was nice to see him steal his first two bases of the season too.

As expected, Donovan makes his return to Sunday’s lineup following a four-game absence due to a left big toe sprain. The 28-year-old on-base machine is back at second base and leading off with Masyn Winn getting a rare day off. It’ll be Jose Barrero taking over at shortstop on Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee.

Gorman’s homer made it a 7-1 game in the fifth and ended Jose Quintana’s afternoon. With Brendan Donovan missing the last four games, Gorman has now gotten to start six straight games. Going into this stretch, he’d started just six of the Cardinals’ previous 21 games. He’s batting .321/.424/.714 in 33 plate appearances this month, so one imagines the Cardinals will stick with him after Donovan returns, which could result in less playing time for Jordan Walker, Alec Burleson and Pedro Pagés (since Iván Herrera would likely do less DHing).

Pallante was given seven runs of support, but the Cardinals still didn’t trust him to finish off the fifth with three runs already in during the inning. Kyle Leahy took over and retired William Contreras and Christian Yelich to end the rally. Pallante remained 4-3 with a 4.83 ERA. He’ll face the Reds next.

Cowser will get some extra time off to rest and recover following a collision with the center-field wall during Thursday’s game against the Tigers. The 25-year-old outfielder isn’t dealing with anything specific from an injury standpoint, but he’s going to sit out his third consecutive contest on Sunday afternoon. It’ll be Cedric Mullins patrolling center field in his place.

The 32-year-old outfielder is up to eight homers while slashing .214/.303/.398 across 234 plate appearances.

The 26-year-old outfielder had been designated for assignment by the Cardinals on Thursday. He’ll say in the National League Central where he’ll report to Triple-A Louisville. Vilade went 1-for-13 in his limited action at the big league level for the Cardinals.
