Taveras went unclaimed after hitting the waiver wire, which isn’t a huge surprise considering how badly he’s struggled with both Texas and Seattle along with a (relatively) high salary. Taveras will need to be added back to the 40-man roster to rejoin the Mariners.

Tellez got the Mariners on the board with a solo homer off Gavin Williams in the fourth inning. It’s the 11th roundtripper of the season for the veteran first baseman, and his double was just his fifth. Tellez certainly has the raw power to hit the ball over the fence, but it’s hard to trust him as a one-tool player playing in a home park that suppresses that tool.

Polanco turned on an offering from Kolby Allard to give the Mariners a 6-2 lead. It’s the 11th homer of the season, and it’s encouraging to see him drive the ball from the right side after struggling — and at times not playing — against southpaws in 2025. Polanco is now hitting .266/.312/.464 on the season with 33 RBI. The majority of that damage was done much earlier in the year, however, as he’s hit just two homers since the start of May.

Castillo allowed just three hits, and two of those were solo homers in the third inning. That means he has allowed five homers over his last two starts, but for the rest of the contest the 32-year-old was excellent in a nice bounceback from his struggles against the Angels the last time out. Castillo now has a very solid 3.29 ERA over his 14 starts, and he’ll get a chance to keep up the good work against the Red Sox on Wednesday.

Bochy elaborated, “It’s just a little sore. We don’t think it’s serious or anything. He could play tomorrow. We’ll see. But more likely, he’ll get a day off to see if we can get that calmed down.” It sounds like unless Carter wakes up feeling significantly worse on Saturday that he’s not going to be heading for any additional testing and should be able to return to action before the weekend is through.

Astros’ skipper Joe Espada called it a “pretty good” sprain after the game and noted that they’ll know more after he undergoes testing. Expect the club to provide another update on his status prior to Saturday’s ballgame.
