Gorman got the start today even though the Cardinals were facing a left-handed opener, and he actually hit homer off said opener, Aaron Bummer. He’s batting .182/.288/.386 in 52 plate appearances against lefties. That’s not a disaster, but the real problem is that he’s still only at .230/.316/.414 against righties; he needs to be better with the platoon advantage to justify his spot, especially since he’s not helping defensively.

He surrendered two homers and struck out just one. Still, this rates as his best outing in weeks, as he’d given up 17 runs over 10 innings in his previous three starts. He had a 3.54 ERA on June 19, but he’s finishing the first half at 4.83, and he’d have to turn it around immediately after the break in order to regain some trade value for the Cardinals.

A single, a sac bunt, another single and an RBI groundout was enough to scratch out a run against Helsley. It’s the first run he’s given up in seven appearances since June 14, and although he’s taken five blown saves this season, this is his first loss.

Not great. Nootbaar has been battling through an intercostal/ribs issue for the past few weeks. The 27-year-old outfielder, who finished Saturday’s contest 0-for-2 at the plate, will presumably undergo further evaluation and imaging to determine the severity of the issue. It’s possible he’ll wind up requiring a trip to the injured list. There should be an update on his status ahead of Sunday’s first-half finale.

McLean has strung together back-to-back double-digit strikeout performances, piling up 20 strikeouts over 11 innings during that span. The 23-year-old righty has been one of the fastest-rising pitching prospects in the fantasy landscape this season with a stellar 2.17 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 95/38 K/BB ratio across 87 innings (16 appearances, 14 starts) between Triple-A Syracuse and Double-A Binghamton. There’s a chance he gets a look later this season with the Mets, but their rotation mix remains extremely crowded.

Hoffman had a 3.88 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 58 innings for Triple-A Norfolk in Baltimore’s organization last year. There was a chance for him to win a spot in Texas’ bullpen this year, but he instead headed to Triple-A Round Rock, where he has posted a 5.91 ERA. He should serve as organizational depth in Philadelphia

McLean turned in an extremely impressive Triple-A debut with his four-seam, cutter and sweeper mix generated 10 swinging strikes and he recorded an elite 36 percent CSW. The 23-year-old former third-round pick is one of the fastest-rising pitching prospects in the fantasy landscape this season, reaching the doorstep of the majors after posting a 1.37 ERA and 30/12 K/BB ratio across 26 1/3 innings (five starts) to open the year at Double-A Binghamton. The sweeper is a true above-average offering and gives him a real shot at success in the majors. There’s a chance he’s ready to pitch in New York at some point in the second half.
