Hicks joins Boston’s relief mix ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Reds. The hard-throwing 28-year-old figures to operate in high-leverage relief spots after coming over earlier this month from the Giants as one of the pieces in the stunning Rafael Devers trade. He’s been tinkering with a new slider during recent rehab outings so it’ll be interesting to see how he incorporates the wrinkle into his existing arsenal.

The Red Sox are up 2-1 after three innings in this one, so Bello will have a much-better-than-usual chance of getting a victory. With six innings to go in the game, this makes a lot of sense for the Red Sox, especially since they’re only permitted to call up a 27th man for the nightcap. They could turn to Kyle Harrison then, since he last pitched for Triple-A Worcester on Thursday.

It’ll be picked up on Wednesday afternoon with the Red Sox holding a 2-1 lead. Boston starter Richard Fitts allowed one run over three frames at the outset of the contest while his Cincinnati counterpart Brady Singer was charged with two runs in his abbreviated outing.

Dobbins was placed on the IL on Sunday with an elbow strain, but the Red Sox never seemed overly concerned. The rookie experienced diminished velocity in his start on Saturday, but he was still able ot throw 75 pitches. The Red Sox had Richard Fitts ready to be activated off the IL, so they were able to put Dobbins on and give him some time to rest. Dobbins will likely make a rehab start this weekend and could remain in Triple-A or perhaps come back to take Walker Buehler’s spot in the rotation if the Red Sox want to give Buehler some time to fix whatever is ailing him.
