Nelson’s run of excellent starts continued Saturday as he held the Royals to one run over seven innings. The one run came in to score in the sixth inning on three base hits. He scattered one other hit and did not walk a batter while striking out five. The 27-year-old right-hander will take a 3.39 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and a 64/21 K/BB ratio across 74 1/3 innings into a start against the Angels in Anaheim on Friday.

Jarvis returns to the big leagues with veteran reliever Ryan Thompson hitting the injured list with a shoulder strain. The 27-year-old compiled a bloated 6.10 ERA across 10 1/3 innings (seven appearances) earlier this season for Arizona. He’ll operate in middle relief out of the Diamondbacks bullpen.

No word yet on how much time Thompson figures to miss. The 33-year-old veteran reliever has been one of Arizona’s key relief cogs this season with a serviceable 4.45 ERA across 32 1/3 innings (36 appearances). He made a career-high 67 appearances last year for the Diamondbacks. There should be an update on his status at some point in the coming days.

Gurriel was robbed of a hit on a diving play in the outfield in the second inning on a 107 mph line drive. He then drove in two runs on a double in the fifth before adding a triple in the seventh and scoring. The 31-year-old outfielder is slashing .253/.300/.429 with 12 homers, 46 RBI, and seven steals across 353 plate appearances.
