Clase entered the game with a 1-0 lead in the ninth inning. The 27-year-old right-hander hit Spencer Torkelson to start the inning. Two batters later, with pinch runner Zack McKinstry on third base and two outs, Clase threw a wild pitch that allowed McKinstry to score and tie the game. The Tigers would go on to win in extra innings. It was a crushing loss for the Guardians, who might listen on trade offers for Clase ahead of the trade deadline. He’s been good enough over the past few seasons that Clase would likely remain in the closer’s role on a potential new team.

All of Ward’s hits were singles, and none of them left the bat harder than 91 mph, but they count all the same in the scorebook. Ward had a rough month of June, hitting .204/.312/.430, but he has come out of the gates hot in July, going 9-for-23 in his first six games. Perhaps his bat is waking up with the California heat.
