    Matt Shaw

    Matt Shaw

    CHC • 3B • #

The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney reports that Matt Shaw is “under the microscope at third base” as the Cubs approach the trade deadline.

Mooney reports that Jed Hoyer, the Cubs’ president of baseball operations, has insinuated that the Cubs plan to be aggressive at the deadline to capitalize on their strong season. Shaw’s “defense has been spectacular, and his offensive production has been lacking,” which means the Cubs could look to add a more consistent option at third base for the playoff push.

    Recap

Jameson Taillon allowed two runs with four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings in a loss against the Astros on Sunday.

Taillon had matched Framber Valdez with four shutout innings before Jose Altuve took him deep for a two-run homer in the fifth for the first runs of the game. That would end the day for Taillon at 107 pitches. He scattered five hits and one walk while striking out four. The 33-year-old right-hander will take a 4.44 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and a 74/20 K/BB ratio across 95 1/3 innings into a start against the Cardinals in Chicago on Saturday.

    Recap

Seiya Suzuki homered and tripled in a blowout win for the Cubs over the Astros on Saturday.

Suzuki hit a two-run shot off Ryan Gusto that gave the Cubs an 11-2 lead. He’s tripled three times in 2025, while the homer brings that total up to 22 at just-over the halfway point of the season. Suzuki doesn’t get nearly enough plaudits for how solid of a player he is, but the Cubs are well aware.

    Kyle Tucker

    Recap

Kyle Tucker homered, drove in three runs, scored four times and stole a base while going 4-for-5 in a 12-3 rout of the Astros on Saturday.

Other than that, it was a pretty quiet day. Tucker’s second game against his long-time employer was a spectacular one, and featured a three-run blast off a wholly ineffective Lance McCullers Jr. in the fourth to give the Astros a 7-2 lead. His stolen base is his 20th, while that roundtripper brings his season total to 17. Time will tell who ‘wins’ the trade between these two teams, but right now, the Cubs have one of the best players in the sport who is now hitting .291/.396..537 in his first (possibly final) season with the Cubs.

    Injury

Nolan Arenado has been diagnosed with a sprained right index finger.

The positive news here for the Cardinals, and fantasy managers, is that X-rays came back negative for any fractures and it sounds like Arenado will avoid a trip to the injured list. The 34-year-old, who is officially day-to-day for now, is out of the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Pirates. He figures to get some additional time off to hopefully put the issue to bed. It’ll be Nolan Gorman handling the hot corner in his absence.

    Transaction

Astros recalled INF/OF Shay Whitcomb from Triple-A Sugar Land.

Whitcomb gets the call to replace Jeremy Peña on Houston’s active roster after the starting shortstop hit the injured list earlier this week with a small fracture in his left ribs. The 26-year-old offers some defensive versatility, and has put up some monster numbers at the Triple-A level the past few years. However, he’s been unable to put it together at the highest level and carve out a semi-permanent role. The talent is there and he’ll continue getting chances to make it as a utility specialist.

    Injury

Nolan Arenado is not in the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Pirates due to a right finger injury.

Arenado has been playing through a right finger issue that cropped up over the weekend when he jammed it on the basepaths. The 34-year-old defensive wizard will get Tuesday’s game off to rest and recover with Nolan Gorman taking over at the hot corner for the second straight game. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for the moment.
