Heading into this weekend’s series, Contreras was batting .102 with five hits and 22 strikeouts in his first 54 plate appearances. He had been working with Cardinals’ hitting coach Brant Brown to curtail “overthinking,” but also decided to try and use his torpedo bat after hitting in the cage with it for the first time during the week. He had four hits over the weekend, including a 110 mph double, a 97 mph home run, and a lineout at 103.9 mph. He had two of the five hardest-hit pitches in Sunday’s game, and three of his swings that led to hard contact were 75 mph or greater. Whether it’s the bat or just Contreras getting his confidence back, we may be seeing the veteran turn a corner.

Mikolas notched seven strikeouts, topping his previous season high by one, but he was handed the loss after leaving with the Cardinals down 2-1. He’ll take a 4-4 record and a 4.35 ERA into his next start against the Reds.

It’s kind of eerie how all of Herrera’s best offensive games come when he’s catching. His previous homer came Monday, which was also the last game he had caught. In between, he was limited to four singles in 20 at-bats as a DH. He’s currently batting .377 with six homers in 12 games as a catcher, compared to .284 with two homers in 27 games as a DH.

As expected, Donovan makes his return to Sunday’s lineup following a four-game absence due to a left big toe sprain. The 28-year-old on-base machine is back at second base and leading off with Masyn Winn getting a rare day off. It’ll be Jose Barrero taking over at shortstop on Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee.

Keston Hiura was bumped from the roster to make room. Toglia, demoted May 31 after hitting .194/.266/.349 over the first two months, figures to get his starting job back after coming in at .273/.353/.568 with three homers in 11 minor league games. He still might wind up hitting enough to help in mixed leagues — he was certainly helpful for a time last year — but there’s probably no urgent need to grab him right away.

Horwitz opened the scoring in the top half of the first inning with an RBI single off of right-hander Colin Rea. He also singled with two outs in the sixth inning but the Pirates were unable to cash him in. With his two-hit attack, the 27-year-old first baseman is now hitting .227/.299/.330 with one long ball and seven RBI.

Schanuel’s home run was his fourth of the year. He hit a solo shot off Scott Blewett in the first inning. Schanuel is hitting .282 with a .770 OPS and 22 RBI on the year. He doesn’t have enough power or speed for shallow formats, but can be a useful bat in AL-Only and deeper mixed leagues.
