Contreras has been diagnosed with a contusion and is day-to-day for the moment. The Cardinals aren’t completely out of the woods yet, but it’s undoubtedly a positive sign that initial X-rays didn’t reveal any fractures. There should be a definitive update on the 33-year-old’s status heading into Wednesday’s showdown in Pittsburgh, but early indications are that he’s avoided serious injury.

Gray had allowed just one run on three hits in his first six innings of work, but he allowed a walk and two singles early in the seventh inning and watched all three runners come around to score against the bullpen. Not that it would have mattered since the Cardinals couldn’t put any runs on the board against Mitch Keller. Gray will hope for better luck next week in a good matchup against the Nationals.

Arenado was diagnosed with a sprained right index finger, which allegedly began over the weekend. After playing through it on Monday, he will now miss two straight games. Thomas Saggese will start at third base and bat sixth on Wednesday.

Contreras was hit by a pitch on his hand during Tuesday’s game. His X-rays came back negative, but he’s understandably a little sore today, in the best-case scenario. There is still time for the Cardinals to put Contreras on the IL if that’s the route they choose to go, but so far, all we know is that he will now start on Wednesday. Alec Burleson will play first base, and Jose Fermin will start in right field.

Let’s try this again. Naylor makes his return to Arizona’s lineup at DH on Wednesday night following a four-game absence due to neck spasms. It’s the type of issue that can be persistent and tends to linger so the hope for fantasy managers is that the extra time off put the issue to bed. The 28-year-old first baseman has put together an excellent Diamondbacks debut so far, hitting .304 with 10 homers and 10 steals through 77 games.

Torkelson also had a 405-foot flyout to center and a 101-mph lineout to third, making this his best performance in several weeks. Torkelson hit .207/.298/.366 in June and started doing some sitting against righties a couple of weeks ago. However, he’s now been in the lineup six straight games, including the last four against righties.
