It was Matthews’ first bullpen session since landing on the IL with a shoulder strain on June 8. He may need one more before heading out on a rehab assignment. The Twins still hope that he can return at some point in July, but we’ll have a better idea of when once he’s cleared for a rehab assignment.

Willi Castro is getting the nod over Harrison Bader in left. Kody Clemens is also out of the lineup after starting against most right-handers in recent weeks. Clemens could get some starts at second against righties if Lee cools off, but Lee is the definite starter for now after hitting .348/.375/.533 over 96 plate appearances in June.

They’d already cleared a spot by DFAing Jonah Bride yesterday. Lewis, who had been out since June 13 with a hamstring strain, will mostly start at third base and occasionally DH for the Twins. Brooks Lee has been very effective of late, so he’ll probably start seeing a lot of time at second, with Willi Castro playing more outfield. Harrison Bader should lose some at-bats.

The rookie is able to hit off a tee, which is a positive step as well. He will receive a further exam in early July to determine possible next steps, but Brooks Lee has also caught fire since Keaschall got hurt, so it’s unclear what kind of role he might return to.
