Itâs a shocking pick for Chicago. Loveland was widely considered the second-best tight end in the 2025 draft class behind Penn Stateâs Tyler Warren. The selection of Loveland likely means Cole Kmetâs time as the Bearsâ starter is over, though he could split tight end snaps with Loveland this season. Loveland (6â6/248) broke out as a sophomore on Michiganâs national championship team with a 45/649/4 receiving line. He finished second on the J.J. McCarthy-led offense in receiving yards. McCarthy left for the NFL and the Michigan passing attack tanked in 2024. Loveland also missed time with a shoulder injury and the struggling Wolverines played in fewer games, dropping his receiving line to 56/582/5. This, however, was enough to easily lead the school in all receiving categories. Loveland was operating as the teamâs de facto WR1, stretching the seam while running nearly half of his routes from the slot. Loveland is a mismatch nightmare for defenses, too fast for linebackers but too big for nickel corners. He does the bulk of his damage before the catch, averaging just 5.4 YAC per catch throughout his career. Loveland underwent offseason surgery on his shoulder and could miss some valuable practice reps to start the summer program, but it doesnât appear to be an issue for his long-term outlook. Even a slow start to his rookie season shouldnât prevent him from being a high-impact player down the stretch.
