Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said QB Justin Fields will start the team’s preseason opener against the Texans.

Russell Wilson, meanwhile, will be sidelined for the game with a lingering calf injury. Tomlin told reporters Wednesday that there is “very much a competition” between Fields and Wilson, who has lost his grip on the starting gig during training camp. Tomlin said he would weigh preseason performance more heavily than practice performance over the next few weeks. Fields, barring a disastrous preseason showing, has a good chance of being the team’s starter in Week 1 against the Falcons.
