The Athletic’s Daniel Popper believes Gus Edwards will have a “big role” in the Chargers offense in 2024.

The Chargers signed Edwards this month to a two-year deal as the big-bodied back reunites with former Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman. “Edwards brings a downhill running style, physicality and proven production in Roman’s scheme with the Baltimore Ravens,” Popper said. “He will have a big role in the offense.” It would be borderline shocking if Edwards — coming off his worst season as pro — were LA’s top running back headed into the season. Popper said the Chargers taking a running back in the 2024 draft is “firmly on the table” as head coach Jim Harbaugh builds a run-first offense that can be managed by Justin Herbert. J.K. Dobbins, coming off an Achilles injury, could also serve as a depth signing for LA this offseason. Edwards in 2023 posted the lowest yards per carry (4.1) and yards after contact per rush (2.71) of his six NFL seasons. He did manage 13 touchdowns, mostly inside the five yard line.
