Lynch in a Tuesday interview acknowledged Pineiro is “going through a rough patch” but committed to sticking with him for now. “We have a lot of belief in Eddie,” Lynch added. “He has had a tough run early this year, but we extended Eddie for his body of work with us but then throughout the history of his career.” Pineiro has missed three of his nine field goal tries on the season and four of his 25 extra point attempts. Pineiro, who made 96 percent of his field goal tries in 2025, will have at least a couple more games before the Niners bring in kicker competition.

According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, the 49ers will sign a kicker to the practice squad as insurance, in case Pineiro cannot play. This is unfortunate. The 49ers’ starting kicker should bank a decent number of extra points, and ideally field goals, against the Dolphins this week.

NFL players generally play through illnesses. We expect Pineiro to be active on game day, though two absences are a bit concerning. Hopefully, he is back on Friday.

Pineiro was a non-participant in practice due to an illness. It’s still early in the week, so the 31-year-old kicker will likely return in time for Week 2 against the Dolphins.

The deal includes $10 million in guaranteed money and ties Pineiro to San Francisco through the 2029 season. Kicking on a one-year deal in 2025, Pineiro converted all 22 attempts from inside 50 yards, also converting 6-of-7 attempts of 50 yards or more. His 96.6% conversion rate on 29 field goal attempts led the league, bringing stability to a position that long plagued the 49ers.

Pineiro had an efficient season for the 49ers, missing just one of his 29 regular season attempts. Lynch said, “we got a couple weeks before free agency to continue to work towards something.” Pineiro is a pending free agent and eligible for the franchise tag should the 49ers not reach a deal with the 30-year-old. Lynch indicated it is not likely the team will tag Pineiro and there is interest to reaching a new deal with the kicker.

Pineiro missed just one of his 29 attempts on the season — 32 if you count the postseason — after the 49ers finally moved on from Jake Moody following Week 1. He now has hit 139-of-155 regular season attempts in six years in the league. It’s very funny that he was freely available to anyone before Week 2 and had a season this good. A 2026 free agent, the 49ers will probably prioritize re-signing him after this performance.

Pineiro missed practice this week with a hamstring issue and will miss a second straight game. Matt Gay, who made both of his field goal tries and both extra point attempts in Week 12 against the Panthers, will kick for the Niners against the Browns. He’s not a great fantasy option considering the weather conditions expected in Cleveland on Sunday.

Pineiro is still not back at practice after suffering a hamstring injury in Week 11. Matt Gay kicked in his stead in Week 12 and is likely to do so again for Week 13 against the Browns.

Linebacker Tatum Bethune and kicker Eddy Pineiro are the two most notable names missing for the 49ers as they fight to keep pace with the Rams and Seahawks at the top of a crowded NFC West. Matt Gay will fill in at kicker while the team will likely require a slight shuffling on the interior of their second level with Bethune out of action.

The 49ers will have a kicker workout on Tuesday or Wednesday. Given the 49ers’ offensive firepower and how often Shanahan is willing to settle for field goals, whoever the 49ers sign could be worthy of fantasy consideration in Week 12 against the Panthers.

Pineiro left in the second half of the 49ers’ Week 11 game against the Cardinals. He missed two extra points on the day, but had made three field goals prior to leaving the game. The 30-year-old was listed as questionable to return, but with the 49ers up big, there may not be a need for Pineiro to kick the rest of the game.

The fabled two-update day on Eddy Pineiro has come to pass. At some point this year he’ll probably be fantasy-interesting, though it might not be in Week 2 given how banged up the 49ers currently are.
Source: Adam SchefterNBC Sports / Rotoworld·Read update → He’s one plausible replacement for the recently-waived Jake Moody. The 49ers kicker job generally comes with a lot of fantasy appeal, but they’re banged up enough to this point that whoever kicks for San Francisco this weekend against the Saints may not see many attempts.
Source: Adam SchefterNBC Sports / Rotoworld·Read update → Fellow free agent kickers Zane Gonzalez and Greg Joseph also worked out for the Bills. Incumbent K Tyler Bass struggled last season and dealt with a pelvis injury in training camp. The Bills are likely just covering their bases, but Bass could be a risky fantasy pick at this time.
Source: Jordan SchultzNBC Sports / Rotoworld·Read update → Jason Sanders will be sidelined to start the regular season, prompting the Dolphins to explore their options at kicker for the first few games. Pineiro has a career 88.1% field goal conversion rate but ended his 2024 season with a hamstring injury.
