The Jaguars lost two starters on the defensive side of the ball in Sunday’s win over the Colts, with Murray and DT DaVon Hamilton (quad) both being dealt season-ending blows. Murray, 32, started all six games he appeared in for the Jags this season, totaling 15 tackles while earning a PFF coverage grade of 60.4. His loss, along with the loss of Hamilton, deals a substantial blow to the Jags’ run defense, as both players have been key contributors in stopping the ground game.
Murray was listed as doubtful on Friday because of a concussion. He returned to practice but couldn’t clear concussion protocol in time. Murray has started all four games this year, though we don’t think his absence will spark a revival of the Eagles’ passing attack.
This courtesy of former Jaguars back Maurice Jones-Drew, who added that Murray will get $12 million in guarantees. Murray has spent the last five years in Houston — he was playing on the team when Bill O’Brien was still the head coach. Entering his age-31 season, this is a strong contract for a player who spent two of the last three years as a reserve. Murray saw more playing time last year as the Texans moved Jalen Pitre to nickelback, and had a playoff pick-six of Justin Herbert. Signing him seems like an admission that the Jags will move on from Andre Cisco.
