Kirk’s double off Devin Williams gave the Jays a 3-2 lead in the ninth, and the pinch-runner employed in his place came around as an insurance run. The double was just Kirk’s fourth extra-base hit of the year, and it was responsible for his seventh and eighth runs batted in. He’s struggled to a .227/.263/.307 line in 80 plate appearances.

The Jays took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth to put Berríos in line for the win when he departed, but it disappeared in the seventh. The team did end up winning anyway to improve to 4-2 in Berríos’s outings this season. José himself, though, is just 1-1 with a 4.24 ERA. His next start will come against the Red Sox, which is also the team his lone win is against.

The 25-year-old rookie outfielder has really scuffled out of the gate, slashing just .203/.284/.297 with one homer, five RBI and a 15/5 K/BB ratio through his first 74 plate appearances. With Daulton Varsho (shoulder) likely to return any day now, it’s possible that Roden could wind up being the odd man out in the Blue Jays’ outfield and be sent back to Triple-A Buffalo for more seasoning.

Ramírez also doubled, and the 23-year-old hit his first MLB homer with a two-run blast off Casey Lawrence. The former New York prospect has been ridiculous with the bat, and while it’s a small sample, hitting .700 with a 1.400 OPS in any amount of playing time deserves admiration. Ramírez has significant upside, and it’s not a crazy notion whatsoever to consider him for a roster spot.

O’Hoppe tagged Louis Varland for a 412-foot (109.2 mph EV) solo shot in the sixth inning that pulled the Angels to within six runs at 9-3. That would be his only hit in the ballgame. He’s off to a terrific start at the plate once again this season, slashing .280/.299/.573 with seven long balls and 12 RBI.
