    Alex Verdugo

Alex Verdugo is leading off on Saturday against the Pirates.

Verdugo is back in the leadoff spot after opening Friday’s contest on the bench with lefty Bailey Falter on the hill for Pittsburgh. The 28-year-old figures to continue leading off against right-handed pitching with Ozzie Albies, who led off Friday’s series opener at PNC Park, getting the occasional opportunity versus southpaws.

    Recap

Matt Olson with 1-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored in a 3-2 win over the Pirates on Saturday.

Olson took Andrew Heaney deep for a solo homer in the third inning for Atlanta’s second run of the game. It was still a 2-2 contest in the 11th inning when Olson started the inning on second base and scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch. The 31-year-old first baseman is hitting .221/.353/.407 with seven homers and 21 RBI across 170 plate appearances.

    Recap

A.J. Smith-Shawver allowed one run with seven strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Pirates on Saturday.

Smith-Shawver gave up two base hits to start the second inning and left both runners stranded by striking out the next three batters. Two walks and a base hit put the Pirates on the board with one run in the third. He would pitch into the sixth, leaving with two outs and two runners on at 97 pitches -- 59 for strikes. Smith-Shawver struck out seven on 13 whiffs. The 22-year-old right-hander will look to keep it going when it takes a 2.76 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and a 34/15 K/BB ratio across 32 2/3 innings into a start against the Nationals in Atlanta on Thursday.

    Injury

Spencer Strider (hamstring) threw a bullpen session on Saturday.

Strider will be re-evaluated later this weekend before the Braves determine whether he’ll require a minor league rehab start. Barring an unexpected development, it sounds like the 26-year-old strikeout artist isn’t too far away from rejoining Atlanta’s rotation.

    Recap

Trevor Larnach hit a homer that accounted for both Twins runs in a 2-1 victory over the Giants on Saturday.

Larnach hit a 108.5 mph double off Logan Webb in the first, but the Twins couldn’t capitalize then. The two-run homer came in the third, and Minnesota’s pitching staff made a 2-1 lead hold up over the rest of the evening. Larnach is batting .232/.313/.380 with six homers and 20 RBI through 39 games. It’s not great for a guy who is spending a lot of time DHing, but it seems unlikely that the Twins will be able to do better.

    Jose Altuve

    Jose Altuve

    HOU • LF

    Injury

Jose Altuve left Saturday’s game against the Reds in the third inning with right hamstring tightness.

He went 0-for-1 with a walk before leaving. It’s worth noting that Altuve’s exit comes in a game where Houston is trailing by five runs, so there’s at least a chance this is precautionary. He’ll likely undergo some testing before Sunday’s finale, but it seems likely that the 35-year-old will be out of that lineup for at least that game. Brendan Rodgers has taken over at second base.

    Recap

Lars Nootbaar went 1-for-5 with a two-run double in the Cardinals’ 4-2 win over the Nationals on Saturday.

The Cardinals did all of their damage against the Nationals in the second inning on Saturday, brining in all four of their runs in the frame. Nootbaar drove in two on a double off Trevor Williams for his only hit in the game. The 27-year-old outfielder is having a solid season at the plate, slashing .243/.368/.401 with five homers, 25 runs scored, and four steals across 182 plate appearances.
