    Ian Happ

    Ian Happ

    CHC • LF • #

Ian Happ is not in the lineup Saturday due to oblique discomfort.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters that the benching is precautionary, so there’s a good chance this will only be a game or two absence for the 30-year-old. Seiya Suzuki will be the left fielder, and Pete Crow-Armstrong is leading off with Happ out.

    Recap

Dansby Swanson went 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBI and a walk as the Cubs edged the Mets 6-5 on Saturday.

Swanson singled in a run in the first and delivered a solo shot off Tyler Megill in the fourth. It was his eighth homer of the year, putting him on pace to smash his 2024 total of 16 homers in 149 games. His .240 average and 48/13 K/BB ratio are mediocre, but as long as the power numbers hold up, he’s at least a fringy option in mixed leagues.

    Recap

Cade Horton got a win in his major league debut after allowing three runs in four innings as a bulk guy Saturday against the Mets.

Some were disappointed to find out Horton wasn’t starting today, but the bulk role definitely helped his chance of getting a win. He took over for Brad Keller with the Cubs up 2-0 in the second and pitched through the fifth before leaving with a 4-3 lead. He struck out five and walked none along the way, and all of the damage came on Brett Baty’s homer in the fourth. Horton should stick for now and face the White Sox as either a starter or a bulk guy next weekend. He’ll be worth playing in mixed leagues then.

    Recap

Porter Hodge worked a hitless ninth with a one-run lead for his second save Saturday against the Mets.

The Cubs didn’t use Ryan Pressly tonight after he threw 19 pitches in a scoreless inning Friday. It’s quite possible Hodge is taking over as the Cubs’ closer, but we’re guessing Pressly will get a chance to hold on to the job if he can avoid any missteps over the next week or two. Hodge is definitely worth rostering at the moment.

    Recap

Trevor Larnach hit a homer that accounted for both Twins runs in a 2-1 victory over the Giants on Saturday.

Larnach hit a 108.5 mph double off Logan Webb in the first, but the Twins couldn’t capitalize then. The two-run homer came in the third, and Minnesota’s pitching staff made a 2-1 lead hold up over the rest of the evening. Larnach is batting .232/.313/.380 with six homers and 20 RBI through 39 games. It’s not great for a guy who is spending a lot of time DHing, but it seems unlikely that the Twins will be able to do better.

    Jose Altuve

    Injury

Jose Altuve left Saturday’s game against the Reds in the third inning with right hamstring tightness.

He went 0-for-1 with a walk before leaving. It’s worth noting that Altuve’s exit comes in a game where Houston is trailing by five runs, so there’s at least a chance this is precautionary. He’ll likely undergo some testing before Sunday’s finale, but it seems likely that the 35-year-old will be out of that lineup for at least that game. Brendan Rodgers has taken over at second base.

    Recap

Lars Nootbaar went 1-for-5 with a two-run double in the Cardinals’ 4-2 win over the Nationals on Saturday.

The Cardinals did all of their damage against the Nationals in the second inning on Saturday, brining in all four of their runs in the frame. Nootbaar drove in two on a double off Trevor Williams for his only hit in the game. The 27-year-old outfielder is having a solid season at the plate, slashing .243/.368/.401 with five homers, 25 runs scored, and four steals across 182 plate appearances.
