Carpenter will likely be limited to DH-only for the time being as he continues to battle an ongoing hamstring issue. It sounds like the 27-year-old slugger will be able to manage the issue and avoid a trip to the injured list. He’s back in Detroit’s upstart lineup following a brief one-game absence.

It appears to be just a routine night off for the 25-year-old outfielder, though the timing is odd with a right-hander on the mound and after Meadows slugged his first home run of the season during Thursday’s victory over the Orioles. Wenceel Perez will start in his place in center field and will bat sixth for the Tigers against Nick Martinez and the Reds on Friday evening.

Brant Hurter will be the opener for Friday’s game. Montero worked behind an opener in his last outing as well, and it’s a way to keep the 24-year-old from seeing the Cincinnati lineup face the right-hander multiple times. He still has a chance to qualify for a win with the bulk assignment, but there are better streaming options for Friday’s slate.

Meadows capped off a four-run uprising in the fourth inning with a 392-foot (105.5 mph EV) three-run shot off of Orioles’ right-hander Dean Kremer. The 25-year-old outfielder struck out in each of his other two at-bats, finishing the night 1-for-4. He’s off to a slow start at the dish since returning from the injured list, slashing .171/.275/.343 with one homer, three RBI and a pair of stolen bases in his first 40 plate appearances.

Walker started in right field, but he got to play only three innings there before the game was delayed and then suspended due to rain. He’ll presumably play for Memphis again tonight, but it should be a rather short rehab assignment for Walker, who has been on the IL since May 31 with wrist inflammation.
