Braves president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos confirmed during a radio interview with 92.9 The Game that they’re picking up Albies’ option for next season. The 28-year-old second baseman underwent surgery in late September to repair a hamate fracture in his left hand — his second hand-related procedure in as many years. From a fantasy standpoint, the key question is whether his power returns after back-to-back hand injuries. He’ll remain relevant in deeper mixed leagues at a thin position if he looks healthy and starts driving the ball again in the spring.

Albies was injured during Monday night’s game and will now miss the remainder of the season. The good news is that he has an entire off-season to heal, but the bad news is that he has already suffered other injuries to this wrist, and so much of his value is based on power production, which is what a hamate surgery can often negatively impact. Albies will be 29 years old next season, so there is a chance the Braves may look to either trade him away or decline his $7 million club option if they are at all worried about his long-term health.

Albies was diagnosed with a fractured hamate bone in his left hand following an awkward swing in the third inning of Monday’s game at Truist Park. It’s his second major left-hand injury in as many seasons after fracturing his wrist last July. Hamate fractures are notorious for sapping power, raising concern for Albies heading into next season given how much of his fantasy value comes from over-the-fence pop. Another looming question is whether surgery will influence Atlanta’s impending decision on his $7 million club option for 2026.

It’s rarely a good sign when a hitter exits mid at-bat, and Albies departed in the third inning with apparent wrist discomfort after an awkward follow-through. The concern is it’s the same wrist he fractured last July, which sidelined him for two months. The 28-year-old second baseman will head for further evaluation and imaging to determine the severity of the issue. There should be an additional update on his status following the contest.

Albies smacked a two-run single off of Charlie Morton in the opening inning that increased the Braves’ early lead to 3-1. He also led off the eighth inning with a single and rode home on a two-run blast by Drake Baldwin. It has still been a disappointing season overall for the 28-year-old second baseman, hitting just .240/.306/.365 with 16 homers, 73 RBI and 14 stolen bases.

Albies has been moved up into the heart of Atlanta’s lineup on the heels of a recent hot streak where he’s batted .293 (36-for-123) with seven homers, 24 RBI and three steals over his last 30 games. Rookie backstop Drake Baldwin has been dropped to the lower third of the lineup card to facilitate the move.

Albies kicked off the low-scoring affair by taking Cubs starter Shota Imanaga deep in the opening frame for his 16th big fly of the season. It was his fourth long ball from the right side of the dish this year. The 28-year-old second baseman has struggled overall this season, but is still on pace to threaten for his first 20-homer and 20-steal campaign since 2021.

Albies has had at least two hits in six of his last seven games. The 28-year-old second baseman is still on pace for a career-worst .244 average even after the hot streak, which should tell you all you need to know about the way his season has gone. Albies is a three-time All-Star, but after three seasons with a sub-100 OPS+ in the last four years, he isn’t going to be a highly sought after fantasy player next year.

He also capped off their scoring with a 383-foot (105.6 mph EV) three-run shot off of Josh Simpson during a nine-run uprising in the ninth inning. Albies’ long-term deal with the Braves, a seven-year, $35 million pact signed as a 22-year-old, was arguably the most team friendly contract ever when it was done in 2019. It’s amazing now to think that the Braves might actually buy him out at $4 million for 2026 rather than keep him for $7 million. Maybe it won’t come to that, but after already having a discouraging 2024, Albies is batting .228/.297/.327 this season, and it’s backed up by some ugly exit velocity numbers. He just isn’t providing much reason to think he’ll bounce back.

Albies was responsible for both runs Atlanta scored off Kodai Senga with a solo homer in the fourth, and an RBI single in the sixth. His third RBI of the game and 47th of the season was a big one as it gave his club a 4-3 lead in the eighth inning. Even with the big game, Albies is not having a fun season with a .227 average and .662 OPS.

Albies’ home run was his eighth on the season for him. The 28-year-old second baseman hit a three-run shot off Rico Garcia in the third inning. Albies is hitting .221 with a .641 OPS and 33 RBI on the year. He’s easily been one of the biggest fantasy busts of the season so far.

Albies connected on his seventh homer of the season and gave Atlanta a 4-3 lead with that roundtripper. The 28-year-old has started to make more hard contact, but he’s been one of the bigger fantasy disappointments of 2025 with a slash of .221/.292/.320.

It’s been hard to find anything positive about Albies’ performance this season, but just showing he can still hit a ball 109.9 mph is encouraging. He also had a 101.1-mph groundout today. He hit four balls at least 100 mph in the series against the Phillies after totaling only 26 through his first 80 games.

Albies got the Braves on the board with a run-scoring double off of Dylan Cease in the second inning. He smacked another double off of the Padres’ right-hander in the fifth inning and scored on a wild pitch. The 28-year-old second baseman also worked a walk in the ballgame, reaching base safely in all three of his plate appearances. On the season, he’s now slashing .239/.299/.351 with five homers, 19 RBI and five stolen bases.

Albies was hitting leadoff because Alex Verdugo was out of the lineup, though Albies still seemed like one of the Braves’ weakest options in that spot. He’s hitting .225/.285/.351 in 165 plate appearances this season, and he’s sporting the weakest exit-velocity numbers of his career.

He also singled and doubled. Albies now has five homers and five stolen bases on the season. His blast came in the fourth inning off Roki Sasaki, and Atlanta still trailed 7-2 after the homer. Albies should continue to see his .248/.302/.395 slash improve through the month of May.

Albies tagged Blue Jays’ right-hander Chad Green for a 373-foot (99.9 mph EV) solo shot in the ninth inning that pulled the Braves to within three runs at 6-3. That would be his only hit in four at-bats on the evening. The switch-hitting second baseman is off to another solid start to the 2025 season, slashing .250/.311/.471 with five homers, 10 RBI and a pair of stolen bases in his first 17 games.

Albies gets the nod atop Atlanta’s lineup to face Toronto lefty starter Easton Lucas with Michael Harris II bumped down to the sixth spot. It was a quiet game for the Braves’ offense, which could only muster three runs against the Rays. All three runs came in the sixth inning with Albies driving in Marcell Ozuna with a clutch two-out RBI single. Albies would later start the ninth inning with a single, but was erased when Sean Murphy grounded into a double play. The 28-year-old second baseman is hitting .250 with a .751 OPS in the early going, though he already has three home runs and two stolen bases.
