Díaz threw 25 pitches on Monday, and Atlanta needs fresh arms for their bullpen game during Tuesday’s doubleheader. The 28-year-old also has an 8.15 ERA in 17 2/3 innings this season, so there is a lot of work to be done to recapture any of his previous fantasy value.

Díaz was claimed off waivers by Atlanta on Sunday and will immediately bring him into their bullpen. The 28-year-old had a 5.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and a 9/2 K/BB ratio in nine innings for the Dodgers, so he’s no longer on the fantasy radar.

It’s unclear at the moment whether the 28-year-old hurler will immediately join the Braves’ bullpen or if he’ll head to Triple-A Gwinnett for the time being. Diaz was designated for assignment on Thursday after posting a 5.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a 9/2 K/BB ratio across nine frames out of the Dodgers’ bullpen. The Braves had a vacancy on their 40-man roster already, so there was no need to make a corresponding move.

The 28-year-old hurler has made nine appearances with the Dodgers this season, compiling a 5.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a 9/2 K/BB ratio across nine innings of work. It seems likely that he’ll pass through waivers unclaimed and continue to function as extra bullpen depth for the Dodgers.

Díaz heads back to the minors after allowing five runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks over seven innings (seven appearances) for the Dodgers. The 28-year-old former Reds closer figures to return at some point in September to work in low-leverage relief spots.

Díaz’s velocity is up two mph from the beginning of the season, and he’s pitched three scoreless innings since returning to the majors. We still worry about his control — he walked seven and hit three batters in 6 2/3 innings for the Dodgers’ Triple-A club — but things are looking up.

Díaz has been added to Los Angeles’ relief corps with closer Tanner Scott landing on the shelf with elbow inflammation. The 28-year-old former Reds closer figures to pitch in low-leverage spots as he continues to work on his command and control.

Díaz returns to the majors for the first time since late April. The hard-throwing 28-year-old former closer fell out of favor in Cincinnati after six abysmal appearances to open the year after battling injuries and mechanical issues during spring training. He hasn’t pitched a ton at Triple-A Oklahoma City since being traded to Los Angeles, but the club is ready to give him a look, presumably in low-leverage spots.

Díaz, acquired in a trade last month, pitched well in his first three appearances for Triple-A Oklahoma City, but his last three saw him give up five runs in 1 1/3 innings, making this an odd time for a callup. It might prove to be a brief stint if he doesn’t thrive right away.

Díaz averaged 95.7 mph with his fastball as a stellar rookie reliever with the Reds in 2022, but that dropped to 94.6 mph in 2023, 94.0 mph in 2024 and 93.0 mph in his six major league appearances this season. The Dodgers, though, seem to have turned things around for him there; he was at 94.6 mph with his 10 fastballs last night, topping out at 95.9 mph. If that extra velocity sticks around, he could be rather helpful out of the big-league pen.

The former Reds’ closer has fallen on hard times after a disappointing 2024 season. He suffered a hamstring injury at the end of spring training that cost him the first few weeks of the season and upon his return he struggled to a cringe-inducing 12.00 ERA, 2.17 WHIP and a 3/5 K/BB ratio over six frames before he was optioned to Triple-A Louisville. The results weren’t much better there, registering a 4.61 ERA, 1.90 WHIP and a 16/12 K/BB ratio over 13 2/3 innings. Given their recent track record with reclamation projects, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Díaz get right with the Dodgers and return to being an effective high-leverage option out of their bullpen before the season is through.

It has been a quick fall from grace for the 28-year-old right-hander. He was expected to open the 2025 season as the team’s closer until a hamstring strain shelved him at the end of spring training. He then posted a miserable 12.00 ERA, 2.17 WHIP and a 3/5 K/BB ratio over six innings with the Reds before getting optioned to Triple-A Louisville. The Reds are expected to receive minor league right-hander Mike Villani in return from the Dodgers.

Hard-throwing 23-year-old Luis Mey will get a shot in his place. Former closer or not, Díaz just isn’t in a position to help the Reds right now. Giving up five runs on Wednesday left him with a 12.00 ERA in six innings, and his 3/5 K/BB is even more disturbing.

Díaz probably didn’t cost the Reds a win in the first game, but he made the nightcap a little more difficult, since the Cardinals were able to save Ryan Helsley rather than pitch him with a 1-0 lead. Díaz seems destined to head to Triple-A at some point here. He’s given up eight runs with a 3/5 K/BB ratio in six innings since returning from the injured list.

Yikes. Díaz came on to record the final out of the sixth inning without incident, but things snowballed out of control in the ensuing frame when he allowed five baserunners, and a handful of stolen bases, in addition to a three-run homer by Kyle Stowers. There’s no scenario where the Reds are going to trust him in high-leverage spots right now, which means he’s a non-factor for fantasy purposes.

Díaz retired the other two, but the Reds replaced him with Graham Ashcraft to finish the frame. It does go down as a hold for Díaz, who was working with a 6-4 lead. Emilio Pagán finished the game with a perfect ninth, but since it was a four-run lead by then, he didn’t get a save. Pagán is the Reds reliever to have rostered right now.

Díaz said no one has discussed his specific role with him. It looks like Emilio Pagán remains the favorite for saves for now.

Díaz goes into the spot opened up when Sam Moll was placed on the injured list Monday. It’s possible he’ll resume closing for the Reds at some point, but he doesn’t seem like a great bet with the way his strikeout rate has dropped. He’s often gotten away with being a flyball pitcher in a bad ballpark for it and with walking too many batters, but it was easier when he was striking out 30% of the batters he faced, rather than 23% like last year. At least until Díaz gets a few scoreless innings under his belt, Emilio Pagán still seems like the Reds reliever worth rostering for now.

It’s unclear whether Reds manager Terry Francona will entrust Díaz with save opportunities right out of the gate after the pair seemingly got off to a rocky start during spring training before the latter suffered a hamstring strain. The 28-year-old former closer struggled with his control in five rehab outings, but his closing experience makes him a true wild card moving forward. His return complicates things for Emilio Pagán and Tony Santillan, who have been getting the majority of early-season save chances for Cincinnati.
