Diaz heads to the shelf after suffering an oblique strain prior to Monday’s series opener against the Dodgers with Astros manager Joe Espada telling reporters he’s going to be out for awhile. The 27-year-old slugging backstop has gotten off to an ice-cold start at the dish, hitting .248/.264/.356 with two homers and 14 RBI in 26 games this season. Fantasy managers in shallow mixed leagues can safely move on to more exciting alternatives.

Diaz was scratched from Monday’s lineup with a left abdominal injury. The exact severity of the injury, and a definitive return timetable, remain undisclosed. There should be a clearer update on his status prior to Tuesday’s contest. Fantasy managers should anticipate a multi-week absence, even in a best-case scenario.

It’s a bit unclear whether Diaz will require a trip to the injured list, but the fact that the Astros have brought up César Salazar from the minors seems to indicate that he’s not going to be available off the bench, even in an emergency. There should be an update on his status following the contest. It’ll be Christian Vázquez handling the catching duties in his absence.

Diaz gave the Astros their only run of the game with a solo shot to left off Logan Gilbert. It’s the first homer of the season for Diaz, and he’s reached 20 roundtrippers in two of his last three seasons.

Diaz reached on an infield single to start the third inning and scored the Astros’ first run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Yordan Alvarez. He then drove in a run of his own with an RBI double off of J.T. Ginn in the ninth inning that pulled the Astros to within seven runs at 11-4. With his two-hit attack, he’s now hitting .227/.280/.273 with zero homers, four RBI and a 6/2 K/BB ratio through his first 25 plate appearances on the season.

It’s a routine day off for a catcher with a day game after a night game, but since Yordan Alvarez is entrenched at the designated hitter, there is nowhere else for Diaz to play. That’s an ongoing battle that he will face all season. Christian Vázquez will start behind the dish and bat ninth.

That’s expected to come soon. Diaz’s DWL season ended on Dec. 17 after he was hurt sliding into second base. Manager Joe Espada said the injury factored into Diaz being left off the Dominican Republic’s WBC roster. He likely would have been the choice to split time with Austin Wells behind the plate, but Agustín Ramírez ended up getting the nod.

It’s the first time that hard-hitting 27-year-old backstop is eligible for arbitration. MLBTradeRumors.com projected that he would earn $4.5 million via the arbitration process, so it seems far more likely that if it does go to a hearing that Diaz would ultimately win out. He’s coming off of another solid offensive season in which he slashed .256/.284/.417 with 20 homers, 70 RBI and a 95/20 K/BB ratio across 567 plate appearances.

Nothing official yet, but it doesn’t sound like it was serious. The injury occurred on a slide. Diaz, who is playing for Escogido, was 2-for-2 with an RBI before exiting.

Diaz would have finished up at 19 homers and 68 RBI with a .694 OPS had he sat this one out. Instead, he comes in at 20 homers and 70 RBI with a .701 OPS, all of which looks quite a bit better. Considering that his defense still draws mixed reviews, it wouldn’t be all that surprising to see Díaz become available in trade this winter. Still, the Astros would probably need to be able to re-sign Victor Caratini before weighing such a move.

The 26-year-old backstop then raced around to score on Jeremy Peña’s two-run double. With his three-hit attack, Diaz is now slashing .259/.288/.422 with 19 homers and 64 RBI on the season.

In a game starved for offense, Diaz had the big hit with a solo home run off Blue Jays’ closer Jeff Hoffman in the ninth inning that proved to be the difference. He drove in the first run of the night too with a double in the second inning and hit each at least 104 mph.

Diaz is still recovering from being hit by a pitch on the left wrist during Sunday’s series finale against the Orioles. It doesn’t sound like a serious concern since he’ll be available off the bench, if needed in an emergency. It’ll be César Salazar taking over behind the plate on Wednesday night since backup catcher Victor Caratini is in concussion protocol.

Jeremy Peña led off the bottom of the first with a homer, but Diaz was responsible for Houston’s other three runs tonight. It’s good timing for Diaz with Yordan Alvarez set to face live pitching this weekend and perhaps returning late next week. The Astros have been using Diaz and Victor Caratini at the same time a lot during Alvarez’s absence, but that will stop once the DH spot is again spoken for.

Diaz has been one of the game’s unluckiest hitters this year, if you believe Statcast, but maybe things are starting to change now. He also had three hits and a homer last night, and he finished today’s game with a .700 OPS (.702, to be exact) for the first time since coming in at .833 on Opening Day.

In what’s been a rough season to this point, it was nice to see Diaz have a signature moment. The Astros got a heroic performance from Framber Valdez in a three-hit, complete game and thankfully their offense did just enough late in this game to get him the victory. Diaz nearly put one out in the fifth inning as well and hit three balls over 100 mph in total and hit another home run last night. Hopefully he’s ready to turn a corner and start a hot streak.

The 26-year-old backstop got the Astros on the board with a gargantuan 430-foot (107.0 mph EV) solo shot off of Shane Baz in the fourth inning. Diaz also smacked a two-out single off of Baz in the sixth inning but wound up getting stranded at third base. With his two-hit evening, Diaz is now slashing a disappointing .236/.276/.379 with six long balls and 23 RBI on the season.
