Eaton has been shipped back to the minors with Masataka Yoshida (shoulder) set to be activated from the injured list for Wednesday’s game against the Rockies at Fenway Park. The 28-year-old infielder hit .250 (6-for-24) with three steals in 14 games with the Red Sox after being called up on June 16.

Eaton gets the nod over top prospect Marcelo Mayer at the hot corner, and also receives his first shot in the leadoff spot to face Nationals lefty Mitchell Parker with Jarren Duran dropped to seventh in the order. The other notable development for the Red Sox is that top prospect Roman Anthony is getting a chance to face another southpaw.

Eaton was up with the Red Sox for a quick cup of coffee earlier this month. The versatile 28-year-old returns to the majors in the wake of Boston’s decision to trade franchise icon Rafael Devers to San Francisco. He’ll occupy a bench role for now and figures to split time between several defensive spots.

Eaton is back in the majors for the first time since getting into 72 contests for Kansas City from 2022-2023. The 28-year-old offers some defensive versatility in a bench role and is certainly worthy of a promotion after hitting .277/.364/.446 with five homers and four steals over 53 games this season at the Triple-A level.

Eaton will be up for the Red Sox as a versatile option who can play the outfield and infield. Boston is also expected to recall Luis Guerrero from Triple-A Worcester before Sunday’s finale against Atlanta. Both players will help Boston’s depth, but they won’t do a thing for fantasy rosters.
