The Royals already picked up a pair of starting pitchers from the Padres earlier in the day in a deal for Freddy Fermin, and now they’ll add to that rotation depth with Falter. The 28-year-old southpaw posted a 3.73 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and a 70/39 K/BB ratio over 113 innings in 22 starts on the season.

Falter had tossed three hitless innings before giving up a leadoff homer to Willy Adames in the fourth. He hung in there for one more frame, leaving after five with one strikeout while working around four walks. The 28-year-old left-hander will take a 3.73 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a 70/39 K/BB ratio across 113 1/3 innings into a start against these same Giants in Pittsburgh on Monday.

In what very well could be Falter’s final start with the Pirates, the left-hander showcased why he should be of interest from pitching-needy teams against a good Detroit lineup. He struck out eight without issuing a free pass while scattering four hits. Assuming he stays in Pittsburgh for at least one more outing, Falter will take on the Giants in San Francisco on Tuesday while taking a 3.82 ERA and 7-5 record into that bout.

After retiring the first two batters of this game, the White Sox jumped on him for three runs via a home run, walk, single and double to put up a three spot in the first inning. He allowed another home run to Luis Robert Jr. in the fourth and was pulled after that frame. It was a good reminder that streaming not-so-great pitchers can always be dangerous this time of year when the weather is warmer. Falter is scheduled to face the Tigers at home next time out.

The Pirates will then follow with Mike Burrows on Saturday and Andrew Heaney on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, and then Mitch Keller and Paul Skenes will start the first two games of next week’s series against the Tigers.

Falter didn’t have much going for him here. Here barely missed any bats and gave up a lot of hard contact, most notable a 466 foot home run by Jac Caglianone. He was fortunate to only allow the three runs considering the Royals put runners on base in every inning and had four extra-base hits in total. The Pirates will (hopefully) call up star prospect Bubba Chandler at some point during the second half and that could put Falter’s rotation spot in jeopardy, unless he or another starter is traded before that happens.

Falter didn’t have much going for him here. He barely missed any bats, striking out just three Royals, and gave up a lot of hard contact, most notably a 466-foot home run by Jac Caglianone. To start with the good news, Falter only allowed three hits in this game. Now the bad news, all three were home runs. Cal Raleigh hit two – the first coming after an error by first baseman Spencer Horwitz which added an unearned run to Falter’s line – and Randy Arozarena hit another. Falter has a surprisingly low 3.69 ERA on the season and has a nice matchup with the Royals coming up next.

Falter was replaced after the delay by Braxton Ashcraft, who did a nice job in stranding both runners he inherited. Falter threw just 30 pitches today, so the Pirates have some options in how they use him over the next week. Perhaps they could have him pitch in relief once. He’s scheduled to make his next start Friday against the Mariners, but the Pirates have an off day right before that and can be flexible.

Falter can thank his offense for giving him this win, as they put up five runs against the Rangers’ bullpen in the fifth inning. Falter struck out just one on the day and walked five while throwing 52 of his 89 pitches for strikes. He posted an OK 21 percent whiff rate but a subpar 19 percent CSW and should not be trusted next week against the Mets.

The 28-year-old southpaw punched out four batters on the evening while issuing one base on balls. All of the damage done against him came via the long ball as Wenceel Perez tagged him for a two-run blast in the second inning and Javier Báez swatted a game-tying solo shot in the fifth inning. Falter got eight swings and misses on 78 pitches on the evening, registering a CSW of 29 percent. He’ll look to bounce back as he carries a 3.49 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and a 50/26 K/BB ratio (80 innings) into Sunday’s matchup against the Rangers.

Falter scattered five hits in the contest, and the only run came on a solo shot from Heriberto Hernández. It’s the second time in three starts that the southpaw has allowed just a run, and he’s now 5-3 on the year with a 3.36 ERA in 2025. Falter comes with risk because he plays for a bad team and he doesn’t miss bats, but he makes sense as a streamer against bad lineups like the one he faced Wednesday. Using him Tuesday against the Tigers seems like a poor decision in process, however.

Falter had a brilliant May, posting a 0.76 ERA in 35 2/3 innings, but June failed to start on a similar note. He allowed five hits, walked two and struck out two in the 65-pitch outing. The Pirates offense picked him up, so he’s still without a loss since April. The club is now 7-6 in Falter’s outings, compared to 5-8 when Paul Skenes pitches. Falter will face the Marlins next time out.

Falter didn’t beat the Padres with swing-and-miss stuff; he struck out just one in the contest and generated only three swings-and-misses. He was effective nevertheless, as he held the San Diego lineup to just two hits and one free pass. That lowers Falter’s ERA to 3.14 on the campaign, and more often than not, the 28-year-old southpaw has been effective on the mound in 2025. He’ll face his former organization in the Phillies next week.

Falter also walked three and struck out just one on the day while posting a 15 percent whiff rate and 24 percent CSW. He struggled to find the zone with his secondary offerings and got just two whiffs on 25 swings on his four-seam fastball. He’ll now take a 3.47 ERA into a tough start against the Padres next week.

Falter knows what you have to do to earn wins on the Pirates: give up zero runs. He’s done so over at least six innings three times this year and won all three games. He’s 0-3 over his remaining seven outings, though a couple of those were quality starts. Falter will face the Brewers at home on Sunday, but while that’s a pretty good matchup, he’s a difficult guy to trust in fantasy leagues, especially on a team that provides so little support.

Only six of the 17 balls in play against Falter were hit hard and most of them just barely (four were in the 95-99 mph range). It’s Falter’s fourth quality start and second win in eight turns this year. He has a 4.36 ERA, which is pretty much what the Pirates should have been counting on. He’ll get the Mets next.

Falter was outstanding against the Padres. He had scattered just one hit and two walks over six scoreless innings before Manny Machado took him deep for a solo homer to tie the game in the seventh. Falter struck out a season-high six batters on the day. The 28-year-old left-hander will take a 5.06 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and a 28/11 K/BB ratio across 37 1/3 innings into a start against the Braves in Pittsburgh on Friday.

Falter’s middling arsenal doesn’t really hold up very well against lineups like the Dodgers’ starting nine. He also gave up seven runs to the Yankees earlier this season. He has a 3.28 ERA against the Marlins, Reds, Nationals and Angels, though. He’ll face the Padres next.

Falter tossed two scoreless innings before Taylor Ward took him deep for a solo homer in the third. Three more hits and a sacrifice fly put two more runs on the board for the Angels in the fourth inning. Falter’s day would be done after four frames. He struck out five on 65 pitches. The 27-year-old left-hander will take a 5.19 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and a 20/7 K/BB ratio across 26 innings into a start against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Sunday.

It feels like Falter does this once or twice a year: just cruises through a game and allows no damage while barely missing any bats. He manipulated the strike zone well and was always able to pick off a corner when he needed it. This shouldn’t change any opinions on Falter though, who has a two-start week coming up against the Angels and Dodgers.

Falter, who averages 1.3 walks per start over the course of his career, issued free passes to the first three batters he faced tonight. He was then fortunate enough to get a double play ball before a two-run homer from Jeimer Candelario. He had more issues in the third, when he walked two and gave up two runs, both unearned, without the benefit of a hit. He avoided any additional walks, but the five made for a new career high. He had walked as many as four batters just once previously. Falter will take an 0-2 record and a 7.20 ERA into his next start against the Nationals.
