The 27-year-old suffered the injury during Thursday’s disastrous outing against the Yankees. Probably from whipping his neck around too quickly to watch all of the hard-hit balls off the Yankees’ bats against him. No word on how long he’ll be shelved for. José Urquidy was activated from the 60-day injured list to take his place on the Tigers’ active roster.

The right-hander struck out three on the night and didn’t walk a batter. The Yankees scratched out a pair of runs against him in the second inning, then added another pair in the third in solo shots by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. The 27-year-old hurler now holds a horrifying 7.18 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and a 26/6 K/BB ratio over 31 1/3 innings on the season. There’s no guarantee that he’ll get to make another start — or function in a bulk role — on Wednesday against the Guardians.

The 27-year-old right-hander struck out three batters on the evening while issuing a pair of free passes. He served up a solo homer to Pete Alonso in the opening inning, then kept the Mets off the board until they erupted for five runs in the fourth inning — the final three on a two-out, three-run blast by Luis Torrens. Gipson-Long generated nine swings and misses on 70 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 26 percent. He’ll try to put this one behind him and move on as he carries a 5.59 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a 23/6 K/BB ratio (29 innings) into Tuesday’s matchup against the Yankees in New York.

Gipson-Long will get a start tonight against the Mets and is expected to stick around afterwards. He’s a reasonable bet to be effective for the Tigers, but he probably will experience quick hooks. He last completed five innings in an outing on June 28.

It’s a challenging matchup for Gipson-Long, in what figures to be a one-and-done spot start. The 27-year-old righty has compiled a respectable 4.32 ERA across 25 innings (six appearances, two start) this season at the highest level. There would be some streaming appeal in an easier matchup, but he’s best left on the waiver wire outside of extremely deep mixed leagues.

Gipson-Long came off the IL on Wednesday and pitched two scoreless innings in relief in the 1-0 win against the White Sox. Now, since he wasn’t going to be able to throw tonight or tomorrow, he’s gone again. That’s just life as a middle reliever with options.

Gipson-Long has been on the IL with a neck injury since July 2nd. He’s made two rehab starts in Triple-A and has built up to 57 pitches so far. With no clear spot in the Tigers’ rotation, it seems that he could operate as a bulk reliever for now.

Gipson-Long struck out three and walked one while throwing 41 of his 57 pitches for strikes and registering a 27 percent whiff rate and 30 percent CSW. His fastball velocity was right in line with what we’ve seen from him this season, and he seems healthy. There is no spot for him in the Tigers rotation now that Chris Paddack is in town, but we’re not convinced that Paddack is a better option than a healthy Gipson-Long.

The 27-year-old didn’t allow a single hit while walking one and striking out five on the day. He threw 41 of his 59 pitches for strikes and looked to be in complete control on the day. Gipson-Long will likely need at least one more rehab start before rejoining the rotation to replace Keider Montero.

Gipson-Long hit the injured list back in early July with neck stiffness. The 27-year-old would help bolster Detroit’s rotation depth ahead of the trade deadline, if he can make it back relatively quickly. He might end up stay in the minors since Keider Montero has done a nice job as the club’s fifth starter.

The 27-year-old right-hander struck out five batters on the evening while issuing a pair of walks. The Twins scratched out a run with a pair of two-out doubles in the fourth inning, then Byron Buxton tagged him for a solo homer in the fifth. He also exited with a man on first in the sixth inning and Brant Hurter was unable to strand him. Gipson-Long generated 12 swings and misses on 77 pitches on the night — six of those on his slider — while posting a CSW of 29 percent. Still in search of his first victory on the season, he’ll carry a 4.70 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and an 18/4 K/BB ratio (23 innings) into Thursday’s showdown against the Nationals in Washington.

This one started off terribly for Detroit. The second batter of the game reached on a strikeout/passed ball, and Hurter, who should have thrown an easy one-two-three frame, gave up a double, two walks, a HBP and a single with two outs, making the score 4-0. Gipson-Long came in and prevented further damage in the inning, but the Tigers never got back into the contest. At least Gipson-Long went on to get 19 outs, five more than in any of his previous three appearances, on only 68 pitches. Still, the home run ball did him in. He’s allowed five of those in 17 2/3 innings since returning from elbow surgery.

Gipson-Long gave up three hits, walked one and struck out two. The 27-year-old right-hander entered the game in the second inning after the Tigers used reliever Tyler Holton as an opener. This was Gipson-Long’s third appearance for the Tigers this year and second with an opener. The Tigers actually used two openers in front of Gipson-Long against the Orioles earlier this week. The openers appear to be part of a plan not to overextend Gipson-Long, who is returning from Tommy John surgery, but are also beneficial for his fantasy value. He’s set to make his next appearance against the Rays on the road next weekend.

The 27-year-old right-hander scattered three hits on the evening and didn’t walk a batter. He came on after Brant Hurter worked 2 2/3 innings as an opener and Chase Lee got the final out of the third inning, yet it was Lee who was credited with a victory in the contest instead of Gipson-Long who served as the bulk guy out of the bullpen and was extremely effective. Probably a bad call by the official scorer on that one. Gipson-Long generated nine whiffs on 51 pitches in the ballgame — six of those coming on his devastating changeup — while posting an elite CSW of 39 percent. If he’s still hanging around on the waiver wire in shallow formats, he makes for a terrific streaming option for Sunday’s matchup against the Reds.

There was plenty of both good and bad in Gipson-Long’s first start since September 28th, 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. As far as the good, his velocity was around 92-93 mph, which is just a hair below where he sat back before the injury. Also, each of his four pitches forced multiple swings-and-misses to total 12. The strength of his secondary pitches is what made him so interesting when he debuted. Yet, his command of those secondary pitches is what set him apart and that clearly wasn’t quite there yet. A couple of his changeups wound up in the heart of the plate and he was lucky those didn’t get crushed. Also, the White Sox two-run rally in the third inning was partially fueled by a hittable few sinkers. All in all, this was a fine return. Especially considering he was only able to work his way up to 70 pitches because his rehab assignment was cut short since the Tigers needed someone to replace Jackson Jobe. Gipson-Long’s next start is scheduled to come against the Orioles in Baltimore.

Gipson-Long will make his return to Detroit’s rotation for the first time since the late stages of the 2023 campaign, after missing all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery, with a tasty matchup on Wednesday night against the rebuilding White Sox. The soft-tossing 27-year-old righty has shown plenty of strikeout potential at the highest level and represents a worthwhile speculative pickup for fantasy managers, especially in deeper mixed leagues.

It’s official. Gipson-Long will join Detroit’s rotation to take the ball on Wednesday against Chicago. The 27-year-old righty showed some promise back in 2023 when he broke into the majors and represents a bit of a wild card at this point after missing last year recovering from Tommy John surgery. He’s a worthwhile lottery ticket for fantasy managers in deeper mixed leagues

The most likely landing spot is Tuesday in Chicago as the Tigers attempt to replace top prospect Jackson Jobe, who has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 flexor strain and is facing a multi-week absence. Gipson-Long showed some real promise back in 2023 when he broke into the majors and represents a bit of a wild card at this point after missing last year recovering from Tommy John surgery. He’s a worthwhile lottery ticket for fantasy managers in deeper mixed leagues, especially in a tasty matchup against the White Sox as part of a potential two-start week.
