Hodge heads back to the minors with lefty swingman Jordan Wicks coming up to take his spot in Chicago’s bullpen. It’s been a lost season for Hodge overall as he’s battled injuries and struggled to a bloated 6.27 ERA across 33 innings over 36 appearances at the highest level.

Hodge returns to the big leagues after spending the last month languishing in Triple-A purgatory. The 24-year-old righty has struggled to a lackluster 6.85 ERA across 23 2/3 innings (26 appearances) this season at the highest level. He’ll likely operate in low-leverage spots for Chicago over the final month.

Hodge remains in the minors after wrapping up a minor league rehab assignment. The 24-year-old righty has struggled overall this season in addition to requiring a pair of trips to the injured list.

The 24-year-old hurler has been shelved since early July due to a right shoulder impingement. He’ll need at least a couple of outings in the minor leagues before he’s ready to rejoin the Cubs’ bullpen. Look for him to return early next week if all goes according to plan.

Hodge heads back to the injured list for the second time this season after serving up three homers and recording only one out during a calamitous relief outing on Tuesday night against Minnesota. The 24-year-old righty is going to wind up missing at least a few weeks, even in a best-case scenario.

The Cubs were down 2-0 when Hodge entered, so he probably didn’t cost them the game. Still, this won’t help his place on the depth chart. Hodge’s 6.85 ERA is mostly the product of two horrendous games; he gave up six earned runs tonight, six earned runs on Apr. 18 and six earned runs in his other 24 appearances combined.

Hodge returns to Chicago’s high-leverage mix, and figures to be in the mix for the occasional save chance, following a five-week absence recovering from oblique and hip injuries. The 24-year-old righty has two saves to go along with a pedestrian 5.12 ERA across 19 1/3 innings (21 appearances) this season.

Hodge is working his way back from separate oblique and hip issues. He looked sharp on Friday in his rehab debut, tossing a perfect frame for Triple-A Iowa. The 24-year-old should return to Chicago’s late-inning mix at some point before the end of June.

The 24-year-old right-hander retired all three hitters that he faced in order, including a punchout, and needed just 14 pitches (nine strikes) to get the job done. He’ll probably need at least one additional outing there, and if he looks as sharp as he did on Friday night it seems likely that he’ll be cleared to join the Cubs’ bullpen.

Hodge threw a bullpen on Friday, so this is the next step for him. After the live batting practice, he’ll begin a rehab assignment and should be back in Chicago’s bullpen by the end of the month. He likely won’t unseat Daniel Palencia right away, but he should return to the high-leverage mix for the Cubs.

Hodge figures to return to Chicago’s high-leverage mix at some point before the end of June. He was making progress in his return from an oblique strain before suffering a hip impingement that delayed his throwing progression.

Counsell added that the oblique strain that put Hodge on the shelf last week has been resolved, but he’s now working through a hip issue. The Cubs are hoping he’ll be ready to throw a bullpen session next week and he’s going to need a minor league rehab assignment before re-joining the club’s high-leverage mix.

The Cubs were thinking Hodge would be sidelined the minimum 15 days, but hope is fading now with the oblique continuing to bother him. Daniel Palencia has stepped in as the Cubs’ closer with Hodge absent.

“In the next couple of days, we need to make progress. Otherwise, the minimum stint is not going to be reasonable,” Counsell added. Daniel Palencia was given a chance to close in Hodge’s place last night, but he failed and took the loss to the Marlins. Ryan Pressly, Brad Keller and Drew Pomeranz should also be in the mix for saves now, but it’s hard to pick a true favorite. We’d take fliers on Pressly and Keller first. Those in shallow leagues could consider dropping Hodge, since it’s not like he was throwing especially well anyway and it’s far from assured that he’ll return to closing once he’s activated.

Counsell added that Hodge was unavailable for Monday’s game against the Marlins, which is presumably why he turned to righty Daniel Palencia in a save situation after Ryan Pressly and Drew Pomeranz pitched earlier in the contest. It’s a tough break for fantasy managers since Hodge figured to be in the mix for saves going forward. It’s a rather unsettled situation, and a bit of a quagmire altogether, but Pressly and Pomeranz seem like the most logical choices to close in Chicago at the moment.

Hodge entered a tie game in the eighth inning to face the heart of the Mets’ order and immediately allowed a home run to Francisco Lindor. After Juan Soto lined out, Pete Alonso cracked a double, and Mark Vientos brought him in with a single, and then Hodge was removed from the game. Vientos would later come around to score himself, which raised Hodge’s ERA to 5.71 on the season. Perhaps more alarming is that his fastball velocity was down almost two mph. With Ryan Pressly struggling, this seemed to be the ideal time for Hodge to capitalize, but he just hasn’t been able to.

The Cubs didn’t use Ryan Pressly tonight after he threw 19 pitches in a scoreless inning Friday. It’s quite possible Hodge is taking over as the Cubs’ closer, but we’re guessing Pressly will get a chance to hold on to the job if he can avoid any missteps over the next week or two. Hodge is definitely worth rostering at the moment.

Hodge got the call in the ninth inning here rather than the assumed closer Ryan Presly, who hasn’t pitched since Sunday but was reportedly unavailable due to a knee issue. This save was a tall task though, with Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts due up in a one run game. Hodge made quick work of each though and could be making his case for more high leverage opportunities in the Cubs’ bullpen soon.

Craig Counsell is glad the Cubs’ comeback will lead to fewer questions about his managing today. Hodge thought he was going to pitch the eighth in a close game, but then he sat back down after the Cubs scored five runs to take a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Jordan Wicks, who was just called up today and has next-to-no relief experience, was brought in instead, but he gave up three straight singles and was pulled. Hodge entered, immediately gave up a grand slam and then got himself into another jam afterwards. He eventually surrendered a two-run double, and after he was lifted, Ethan Roberts gave up a three-run homer to Lourdes Gurriel Jr., producing a 10-run inning. Hodge’s ERA jumped from 2.00 to 7.45.
