That’s a 30-point bump in OPS (.755 to .786) on the third-to-last-day of the season, and oddly enough, it came in just his second start all year against a left-hander (though both homers came off right-handed relievers). It’s Horwitz’s fourth career two-homer game, which is pretty incredible for someone with a total of 24 homers in 218 big league games. The Pirates should have reservations about going forward with such a low-ceiling first baseman, but the big game tonight means he’ll probably finish with an OPS+ in the 110-115 range, just as he did for the Blue Jays last year, and he’s set to make close to the minimum again next season. Upgrading from him will probably be a low priority for a thrifty franchise.

Horwitz was the Pirates’ offense in this one. He drove the only two runs they could muster against Hunter Greene and then smacked a go-ahead double in the 11th that proved to be the winning run. After missing the first seven weeks of the season with a wrist injury and then struggling to get going through the summer, he has an .860 OPS over his 30 games with more walks than strikeouts.

Horwitz laced a home run in the fifth inning off Nationals’ starter Brad Lord. It was his second hard-hit ball of the game and he’s enjoyed a solid second half with seven home runs and an .846 OPS while consistently hitting in the upper-third of the Pirates’ lineup.

Horowitz is on a nice, under the radar hot streak right now. He had three hard-hit balls in this game and now has eight extra-base hits in August. Over his last 30 games, he has an .873 OPS and 20 RBI after struggling mightily through May and June when he first came off the injured list. This is a solid pitcher and one to take notice of.

They were Coors Field homers against pitchers who should be in Triple-A, but it’s still nice to see Horwitz show some pop. He had just three homers in 236 plate appearances since coming back from wrist surgery. His game has always been more OBP focused, but he still managed 12 homers in 381 plate appearances for the Jays last year. The outburst today added 45 points to his OPS (.681 to .726).

Horwitz doubled in the fifth for the Pirates’ lone run in regulation. The Pirates scored in the 10th after Henry Davis grounded the ball to the mound with runners on the corners. Ryan Walker could have had Oneil Cruz at home or in a rundown, but he instead threw to second, not knowing that the runner had been off from first with the pitch. Cruz scored, and the Giants got just the one out at first. In the bottom of the inning, the Giants had the automatic runner on third after a sac bunt, but Patrick Bailey and Heliot Ramos struck out against Isaac Mattson to end the contest.

Horwitz rudely welcomed Troy Melton to the majors with a bases-clearing homer to center that gave Pittsburgh a 5-0 lead. The 27-year-old has homered just three times in an injury-shortened season, but he’s starting to swing the bat more effectively as of late. Those who are desperate corner-infield help may want to give Horwitz a look; the worst thing that happens is you drop him if the hot streak ends.

Horwitz opened the scoring in the second inning with a two-run double off of Casey Mize. He then smacked a one-out double in the fourth inning and scored on an RBI single by Bryan Reynolds. The 27-year-old first baseman also reached on a wild pitch after striking out in the sixth and came around to score on another RBI knock by Reynolds. For the season, he’s now slashing .249/.318/.348 with a pair of homers and 19 RBI in 201 plate appearances on the season.

Jared Triolo gets the nod at the cold corner over Horwitz, who takes a seat after making eight consecutive starts since June 28. He’s batted leadoff in six straight games for the Pirates, which certainly helps his fantasy appeal in extremely deep formats.

Pittsburgh has won four consecutive games by at least seven runs following Monday’s latest one-sided blowout. Horwitz was the primary catalyst in this one, kicking off the scoring with a first-inning solo shot — his second round-tripper of the season — against Cardinals starter Erick Fedde. He also tacked on a two-run double in the fifth inning as part of a six-run explosion for the Pirates red-hot offense.

The 27-year-old missed the start of the season with a wrist injury, but has been coming around a bit of late. He has hits in nine of his last 11 games and has gone 12-for-40 (.300) over that stretch. However, that has come with just four RBI, nine runs, and no home runs. He remains more of a deep league fantasy asset.

Horwitz opened the scoring in the top half of the first inning with an RBI single off of right-hander Colin Rea. He also singled with two outs in the sixth inning but the Pirates were unable to cash him in. With his two-hit attack, the 27-year-old first baseman is now hitting .227/.299/.330 with one long ball and seven RBI.

He’ll take a seat with left-hander Matthew Boyd getting the ball for the Cubs in this one. The 27-year-old is hitting just .214/.290/.321 with one homer, six RBI and a 24/8 K/BB ratio over 93 plate appearances since his return from the injured list. Jared Triolo will start in his place at first base and bat seventh for the Pirates on Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field.

The 27-year-old first baseman will get a rare day off with left-hander Framber Valdez toeing the slab for the Astros. Horwitz is off to a slow start since returning from the injured list, slashing just .230/.299/.328 with one homer, five RBI and a 15/6 K/BB ratio across 67 plate appearances. Jared Triolo will start in his place at first base and will bat eighth for the Pirates on Thursday evening in Pittsburgh.

Horwitz had his third multi-hit game in seven starts since returning from the injured list. He put the Pirates on the board early with a double in the first inning to drive in Bryan Reynolds and later added a second double. The 27-year-old infielder is 7-for-27 with one homer and three RBI through his first week back.

All three of his balls in play were hard hit. The intentional walk came after a 3-0 count in the eighth. Horwitz entered the night 1-for-7 in three games since coming off the IL on Saturday. He has second base eligibility in fantasy leagues, and it’s easy to imagine him posting a solid OPS while starting against all righties and some lefties. Still, it’s going to be tough for him to amass mixed-league value in a lineup as bad as Pittsburgh’s.

Horwitz went hitless in a pair of at-bats before being lifted for pinch-hitter Alexander Canario in the seventh inning of his season debut. The 27-year-old missed the first seven weeks of the year recovering from right hand surgery. He’ll take over as Pittsburgh’s primary first baseman moving forward.

Horwitz is likely going to need a couple weeks of rehab games to get back up to speed before making his season debut. The 27-year-old will take over as Pittsburgh’s starting first baseman once he’s ready to roll. He’s been out since early February recovering from right wrist surgery.
