Dr. Keith Meister performed the reconstructive surgery earlier this week. Jobe is expected to miss a significant portion of the 2026 campaign given the timing of the procedure, which typically carries a 12-14 month recovery timeline.

Jobe is going to miss all of 2025 and a large portion of 2026 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. The move opens up a space on the 40-man roster to select Matt Gage from Triple-A Toledo.

It’s a crushing development for Jobe, who entered the season as one of the consensus top pitching prospects in baseball. The hard-throwing 22-year-old struggled to consistently miss bats in his first extended opportunity in the majors, posting a serviceable 4.22 ERA and 39/27 K/BB ratio across 49 innings (10 starts) before hitting the injured list in late May with a flexor strain. He’s likely to miss a significant portion of the 2026 campaign given the timing of the surgical procedure.

As anticipated, the 22-year-old right-hander lands on the injured list with a flexor strain in his pitching elbow after experiencing a sharp drop in his velocity during Wednesday’s start against the Giants. No word yet on how long the Tigers expect him to be shelved for, but they’re obviously going to take every possible precaution before bringing him back. Dylan Smith was promoted from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move on Friday.

The velocity drop alone might not be reason for panic, but Jobe didn’t talk to reporters after the game and wasn’t seen in the clubhouse. According to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers even closed the clubhouse early in violation of MLB regulations. If something is wrong with Jobe, the Tigers could move Brant Hurter into the rotation or maybe give Dietrich Enns a try.

Jobe gave up six hits, walked two and struck out five. The 22-year-old right-hander’s exceptional stuff was on display again Sunday as he struck out Bo Bichette with a 97 mph sinker that had 19 inches of arm-side run. Jobe has now won back-to-back starts and completed six innings for the second time in eight starts Sunday. He’s lined up to face the Guardians at home next weekend.

The pitching matchup between two young potential aces in Jobe and Chase Dollander saw both starters allow six runs. Jobe allowed eight hits, and two of those hits were homers; both of the two-run variety. The 22-year-old gave up just six runs in his four starts in April with a 2.70 ERA, so hopefully this is just a blip on the radar in a tough stadium to pitch in. Jobe gets the Red Sox with a chance to rebound Monday.

Jobe was given seven runs to work with in the first three innings today and had a 7-1 lead going to the fifth, but he fell short of his third win. The bottom of the fifth opened with a walk, a single and a two-run double, at which point Jobe was pulled. Braden Hanifee took over and stranded the runner, preventing further damage to Jobe’s ERA. Jobe ended up allowing four hits, walking four and striking out four. He has a 3.38 ERA after five turns, but the 18/14 K/BB in 24 innings is thoroughly unimpressive. He’ll likely make his next start Tuesday or Wednesday in Coors Field, and he doesn’t seem like a great mixed-league option then.

Detroit has ostensibly skipped Jobe’s turn through the rotation, giving him a whopping 12 days off between outings, in an effort to manage his season-long workload. They’re basically rolling with a six-man rotation with Keider Montero helping gobble up innings as needed. The 22-year-old, who holds a strong 2.70 ERA through four starts this season, is healthy and in line to take the ball for Wednesday’s afternoon’s matinee at Daikin Park in Houston.

He also isn’t going to start on Sunday, as Tarik Skubal will stay on his regular schedule. It sounds like the Tigers are going to use Friday night’s rainout as a way to push Jobe back as they’re looking to manage his overall workload on the season and this seems like a prime opportunity to do so. Expect someone from Triple-A Toledo, probably Keider Montero, to start the second game on Saturday with Casey Mize taking the ball in Game 1.

Matched up against Royals’ ace Cole Ragans it was Jobe who shone brighter on Friday night, piling up five strikeouts while walking a pair in his five frames. The lone tally against him came in the opening inning as Bobby Witt Jr. doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Vinnie Pasquantino. Jobe generated 10 swings and misses on 87 pitches on the night — four each on his changeup and slider — while registering a CSW of 29 percent. Now 2-0 on the season, the 22-year-old hurler will carry a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and a 14/10 K/BB ratio (20 innings) into a tough matchup against the Padres on Wednesday.

Jobe’s best start to date still featured just two strikeouts, eight missed swings and a 24% CWS. However, he was never really threated by the Twins while allowing just two singles. It’d definitely be nice to see him miss more bats, but the talent remains obvious, and in such a good situation for pitchers in Detroit, he probably won’t need to fan a batter an inning in order to offer some mixed-league value.
