Alvarez registered five batted balls with exit velocities north of 99 mph in this one, including three that topped 104 mph. He’s collected 11 hits over his last seven games and is now batting .315 with a .964 OPS on the fall circuit. The 22-year-old will head to spring training competing for a spot on Atlanta’s bench as a versatile utility option, which could translate to some appeal in deeper NL-only formats.

Alvarez sat out Sunday’s series finale against Detroit with a thumb laceration that he suffered at some point during an epic two-homer explosion during Saturday’s contest. The 22-year-old rookie infielder will draw the majority of the starts at the hot corner for Atlanta over the final week of the season.

It’s highly unusual to see a young player retreat to the bench following a two-homer explosion, but that’s the case in this one as Alvarez apparently cut his thumb at some point during the late stages of Saturday’s contest in Detroit. The 22-year-old rookie infielder tallied three hits, including his first two big-league homers and a game-tying single during the comeback win. He’s day-to-day heading into the final week of the season. It’ll be Vidal Bruján drawing a start at the hot corner in his place.

Alvarez went 59 games without a round-tripper at the outset of his big-league career before going deep twice during Saturday afternoon’s slugfest in Detroit. It was a memorable contest for the 22-year-old rookie as he kicked off the unexpected power barrage by taking Tigers starter Keider Montero deep in the third inning before taking relief ace Kyle Finnegan deep in the eighth. He had a chance to be the hero for Atlanta with two outs in the ninth and managed to come through with a game-tying single to right field.

The 22-year-old infielder was held out of the lineup on Thursday due to soreness in his side, though he did appear as a pinch-runner. He’s back in there at the hot corner and batting eighth against Marlins’ right-hander Edward Cabrera on Friday evening in Atlanta.

Braves’ skipper Brian Snitker noted that it’s a minor issue that Alvarez sustained while sliding during Wednesday’s contest and that he may be available off the bench if needed on Thursday. He’s considered day-to-day and should be back in there at the hot corner on Friday.

The 22-year-old was up when Austin Riley (abdominal) was on the IL earlier in July too. He may get some starts this time around, but he’s hitting .254/.405/.349 in 18 games at Triple-A with one home run, so there is not much fantasy value here.

Alvarez had been serving as the Braves’ starting third baseman with Ausitn Riley out, but the 22-year-old won’t be kept as a bench player now that Riley is back, since the team wants him playing regularly. He went 6-for-30 in eight games, but he made a couple of outstanding defensive plays, and no one would have cared about how awesome Ronald Acuña Jr.'s throw to third was if Alvarez didn’t stall Jorbit Vivas with a big-time deke.

Alvarez, who appeared in eight contests last season for Atlanta, gets the call back to the big leagues with third baseman Austin Riley heading to the injured list with an abdomen strain. The 22-year-old infielder’s defensive versatility should help out in a bench role, but he doesn’t offer much offensive upside at this stage of his development. He can be safely ignored in shallow mixed leagues.

Alvarez will go back to making a minor league salary after just four rehab games in which he went 4-for-15 with a double. The 22-year-old infielder had been on the IL with wrist inflammation since the beginning of the season.

Alvarez played just two games in the Florida Complex League, but he will now step up his rehab significantly in Triple-A. He has been out all season with his wrist injury and will need some time to get his rhythm back, but it’s possible he could return to Atlanta as a backup middle infielder.

Alvarez has been on the injured list since late March with what was deemed “wrist inflammation.” It would be likely that something else was going on since it’s been over two months, so it should be a lengthy rehab assignment for the 22-year-old shortstop. Even though Nick Allen isn’t providing a lot of offense in Atlanta, he’s been great defensively, so we wouldn’t expect Alvarez to push him for playing time unless Atlanta falls out of the playoff picture.
