Dodgers’ skipper Dave Roberts told reporters that Kopech is dealing with a wide array of injuries, mentioning a possible shoulder or elbow issue in addition to the knee injury that he has been battling through. The Dodgers are hopeful that a bit of rest will do some good and that he’ll be ready to join the bullpen for the postseason.

Kopech is back from a two-month absence after knee surgery. He’s been limited to eight major league appearances this season, during which he threw seven scoreless innings. However, he really struggled during his most recent rehab assignment, giving up seven runs and walking nine in 5 1/3 innings.

The right-hander averaged 96.3 mph on his four-seam fastball, which remains down almost two mph from his season average. He relied heavily on his cutter but got just one whiff on eight swings. He’s eligible to be activated in two days, but it remains to be seen whether the Dodgers are going to bring him back at the first chance.

Kopech averaged 97.4 mph with his fastball, but he didn’t much seem to know where it was going. Fortunately, he has some time to get it together in his return from knee surgery; he’s not eligible to come off the 60-day IL until Aug. 27.

Kopech was put on the injured list back on July 1st with knee inflammation and then had surgery later in the month to repair a torn meniscus. The Dodgers wanted Blake Treinen to throw on back-to-back days before being activated, so if they take the same approach with Kopech, it might be a couple of weeks before the 29-year-old is back in the Dodgers’ bullpen.

Kopech underwent surgery last week to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, and was placed on the 60-day injured list. The right-hander will be eligible to return in August, and could be a high-leverage option for the Dodgers’ bullpen by the end of 2025.

Kopech is expected to pitch again this season, but he’s not going to make it back to Los Angeles’ relief mix until late August at the earliest. The hard-throwing 29-year-old was transferred to the 60-day injured list earlier on Wednesday.

Kopech is moved to the 60-day list to make room for Tyler Glasnow (shoulder), who is coming off that list to start Wednesday against the Brewers. Kopech now won’t be eligible to return until the end of August.

Kopech downplayed the injury to reporters on Tuesday, saying that he’s received an anti-inflammatory injection to address the issue and isn’t dealing with any structural issues in his knee. It sounds like he has a decent shot at making it back in a couple weeks.

Kopech came in with a 4-2 lead to the start the seventh and got Jake Cronenworth to ground out after three straight pitches around the zone. His control disappeared afterwards, and with no idea where the ball was going, he brushed back Elias Díaz three times in his plate appearance. Kopech fared a little better on the next walk to Fernando Tatis Jr., but he was then pulled with the bases loaded. Fortunately for the Dodgers, Anthony Banda came in and got Luis Arraez to pop up and Manny Machado to ground out (on a 3-0 pitch) to end the threat.

It wasn’t a save situation because the Dodgers led by four runs, but Kopech finished the game for Los Angeles with Kirby Yates pitching in the seventh inning and Tanner Scott in the eighth inning. Does this mean Kopech is the closer now? Well, maybe, but at the very least he’s firmly in the mix for saves, which muddies the situation for all three relievers.

Kopech returns to Los Angeles’ overworked relief corps after missing 10 weeks at the outset of the season recovering from a shoulder impingement. The hard-throwing 29-year-old righty was a certifiable weapon last year after coming over from the White Sox at the trade deadline, compiling a stellar 1.13 ERA and six saves across 24 innings of work. He could factor in the club’s closing mix at some point in the coming weeks, but will likely handle lower-leverage work right out of the gate.

Not only could Kopech return to the Los Angeles bullpen, but Roberts insinuated that Kirby Yates (hamstring) could be back to help the bullpen as well. Kopech would be making his season debut, and the 29-year-old would be a high-leverage option at some point, even if Los Angeles eases him into that role to begin his 2025 campaign.

It’s a bit unclear how close Kopech is to making his season debut, but he figures to be on the precipice following this latest throwing session. Los Angeles could certainly use his help in high-leverage spots. He’s been on the shelf since spring training working his way back from a shoulder impingement.
