Mayo was responsible for Baltimore’s lone extra-base hit of the contest when he doubled against Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet with one out in the fourth inning. The 24-year-old former top prospect has shown some signs of life recently with hits in four consecutive games.

The 110-mph homer was Mayo’s lone hit of the day, but he did have a 108-mph lineout to go along with it. Kind of incredibly, Mayo now has 12 100-mph balls in play this season but only seven hit between 90-99 mph. The power is obviously there, but the consistent contact just isn’t, which is why he’s hitting .164 this year and .195 in 122 big-league games to date. If the Orioles get healthy, he still could wind up back in the minors at some point.

Mayo is just 6-for-38 on the season with one extra base hit and a 13/6 K/BB ratio. With Ryan Mountcastle (foot) now potentially out for over a month, Mayo should continue to get an opportunity to play regularly in Baltimore, but he’ll need to start producing soon before Jackson Holliday (hamate) returns to the lineup. For now, Blaze Alexander will start at third base and bat ninth.

His three balls in play were flies with 50-, 61- and 73-degree launch angles, all producing .010 xBAs. It’s still just 10 games, but Mayo is 5-for-30 with one extra-base hit (a double), one RBI and 11 strikeouts. A decent start probably would have kept him in the role as the Orioles’ primary third baseman at least until Jordan Westburg returned (if Westburg returns). As is, he could face demotion once Jackson Holliday is activated. It’s between him and Jeremiah Jackson, who, fortunately for Mayo, is also off to a poor start.

It’s the second time in three games that Mayo has sat, both against right-handed starters. Mayo is off to a .118/.250/.176 start in 20 plate appearances. Jeremiah Jackson is handling second base while Blaze Alexander shifts over to the hot corner.

Based on his mediocre exit velocity numbers and too-high strikeout rate, Mayo’s September breakout last year seemed like a mirage. His strong spring numbers, though, hold up much better to scrutiny, as he’s struck out just once in 34 plate appearances and his hard-hit rate sits at 47%. We’re still not particularly confident he’ll be helpful in shallow leagues while filling in for Jordan Westburg, but there are certainly worse fliers out there.

Mayo put the Orioles on the board with a 434-foot home run off of Lance McCullers that left the bat at 108 mph. He also added a 103 mph single and a 100 mph single on the day. This spring, Mayo has gone 13-for-26 with one home run, 10 RBI, and just one strikeout. He also only has one walk, so he is clearly taking a more aggressive approach, but that could work for him with his plus raw power. Mayo should start the season at third base with Jordan Westburg (oblique/elbow) out, and if he hits, he will continue to see regular at-bats. He looks like a clear post-hype “sleeper” right about now.

Suddenly with fresh life at playing time in the wake of Jordan Westburg’s oblique injury, Mayo is carrying a 1.227 OPS and his double came off the bat at a game-high 111.5 exit velocity. Mayo is definitely in the AL-only conversation at third base. He may yet mount a case to be in the mixed league discussion if he keeps hitting like this.

Mayo had two singles, including an RBI in the first inning. He also added a 102.7 mph flyout that fell just short of a home run at 348 feet. The 24-year-old is battling for a starting spot with Jordan Westburg (oblique) sidelined to start the season. There are some batting average concerns, but Mayo has the power and pulled fly ball approach to hit 25 home runs if he gets a full season of at-bats.

Mayo is just 24 years old and a one-time top prospect, who has yet to put it together at the big league level. Yet, he hit .301/.393/.548 with three doubles and five home runs in 24 games in September to end the season, so it would make sense for the Orioles to try and find a way to get him into the lineup. They could use Mayo and Ryan Mountcastle at DH, which would mean no room for Samel Basallo, or they could give Mayo a chance to earn starts in the corner outfield, something that they had been hesitant to do in the past.

Mayo reached base safely in all three of his plate appearances in this one and is quietly batting .306 (19-for-62) over 19 games since the start of September. The 23-year-old former top prospect has recorded multiple hits in four of his last 10 games. He’s clearly building some momentum heading into next season.

The double was a 90.5-mph fly down the left field line that barely caught some chalk near the low wall at Camden Yards. Mayo is now 10-for-25 with two homers in his last eight games. He’s still not hitting the ball particularly hard, but just getting it in play more is working out for him.

Mayo knocked a base hit in the second inning, then gave the Orioles an insurance run with a solo homer off Braydon Fisher in the ninth. It was Mayo’s eighth homer of the season. The 23-year-old first baseman is slashing a disappointing .191/.263/.342 with 22 runs scored and 23 RBI across 247 plate appearances.

Mayo is 1-for-17 with no hard-hit balls in his last five games, and he’s down to .188/.269/.320 for the season now. He also wasn’t very good in his 45 games in Triple-A (.226/.318/.452). No one is giving up on him long term, but this has been quite the discouraging season for the 23-year-old.

Mayo was drilled in the right hand by a pitch from Bryan Abreu to open the ninth inning. He stayed in the game to run the bases for himself but was sent for precautionary X-rays after the game. All seems to have checked out well. The 23-year-old slugger should be considered day-to-day.

Mayo broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with his laser beam into the Crawford Boxes for his fifth home run of the season. While he hasn’t produced much at the plate, he’s finally been given the reins to start everyday. Of their 12 games since the trade deadline, he’s been in the lineup for 11 of them. Hopefully that consistency gives him the jolt he needs to finally carve out his spot in the league.

The homer off Ranger Suárez was Mayo’s fourth in 135 plate appearances this season. He showed signs of heating up in late August, but he came into this one 2-for-22 with no extra-base hits in his previous seven games. Now that he’s playing regularly, it’d be nice to think he’s going to offer some mixed-league value. He just hasn’t shown any consistency yet, though.

The 23-year-old figures to start both games of the doubleheader with the Blue Jays throwing two left-handed pitchers. Mayo has started the second half going 7-for-17 with two home runs and five RBI. With Ryan O’Hearn likely being moved at the deadline, it’s possible that we will finally see Mayo get consistent playing time at the big league level and make good on his prospect pedigree.

Mayo is one of the young hitters poised to benefit from some additional playing time on a rebuilding club following this week’s trade deadline. The 23-year-old former top prospect appears to be gaining some confidence recently after struggling mightily in the big leagues over the last two seasons. He punctuated his first three-hit performance in the majors with a third-inning homer against Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt before adding an RBI ground out in the fifth. He’s the type of up-and-coming hitter that needs to be rostered in deeper mixed leagues, especially since he figures to play everyday at first base once Ryan O’Hearn is shipped out in a couple days.

What a novel concept by the Orioles by playing one of their top prospects in this game. Mayo has struggled to get off the bench this season and his .616 OPS also hasn’t forced Baltimore’s hand. However, he hit a long 413 foot in this game to remind everyone about his gaudy raw power. Also, the Orioles pinch-hit Ryan O’Hearn for him with two outs and a runner on second base trailing by one run in the eighth inning. O’Hearn promptly struck out and they blew a great chance for a talented rookie who should be one of the key pieces to the future of their franchise to build some momentum. The Orioles simply cannot get out of their own way sometimes.

The single was a pop fly to shallow center than Angel Martínez should have caught, but three walks is pretty good, especially when the rest of the Orioles lineup had three combined. Mayo was starting tonight for the second time since the All-Star break and fourth time this month. His usage would make a lot more sense if the Orioles were in contention, but given that they’re clearly planning to sell, it’s about time to make him a lineup fixture and just see what happens.

Mayo is making just his fourth start since July 1. The 23-year-old former top prospect would likely benefit from playing regularly at the Triple-A level, but he figures to have a clearer path to at-bats once Baltimore jettisons All-Star Ryan O’Hearn, who is on the bench on Tuesday night, at the upcoming trade deadline.

It appeared that the Orioles pulled him for defense, as he’s still learning the finer points of playing first base. Mayo is 10-for-47 with no homers and four doubles in 15 games since being recalled from Triple-A on May 31. One can still dream of him offering mixed-league value at some point during the second half, but it’s not happening right now.

With Jordan Westburg back and Ramón Urías still available, there’s very little need for Mayo at third base right now. There still should be ample opportunity for him first and DH, but he’s going to have to step up and claim it; he’s been on the bench the last two times the Orioles have faced righties.

Mayo has been taking defensive reps at the cold corner since returning to the majors last week and will make his first career start at the position on Wednesday night in Seattle. The extra defensive versatility helps give him another avenue to at-bats in Baltimore’s lineup moving forward.

Mayo went 1-for-3 with an RBI on Saturday after being promoted from Triple-A Norfolk. The 23-year-old top prospect figures to continue occupying the DH spot, but could also see some time at first base, while Ryan Mountcastle is on the injured list with a hamstring strain.

The talent is there, but the results simply haven’t been for Mayo in several stints at the highest level over the past two seasons. The 23-year-old top prospect, who has hit .094 (5-for-53) in 21 games in the majors, will get another chance with Ryan Mountcastle hitting the injured list ahead of Saturday’s showdown against the White Sox with a hamstring strain. He’ll need to show something in the big leagues before fantasy managers in shallow mixed leagues can trust him with a roster spot, but he’s certainly talented enough to flip the switch.

The 23-year-old top prospect is either being summoned as an insurance policy in case Ryan Mountcastle has to go on the injured list after leaving Friday’s game with a hamstring injury, or the O’s already know that Mountcastle is going to miss some time and they need Mayo there as soon as possible. We’ll know more before Saturday’s game, but it sounds like it could be the latter.

Mayo saw just 13 plate appearances during his brief stay with the big league club, going 1-for-12 (.083) with a single and a 6/1 K/BB ratio. He’ll return to an everyday role at Norfolk where he’ll continue to sharpen his skills until a full-time opportunity emerges with the Orioles.

Mayo has gone 0-for-8 with five strikeouts in three games since returning last weekend to the big leagues. The 23-year-old top prospect figures to be ticketed for Triple-A Norfolk once starting third baseman Jordan Westburg (hamstring) is ready to return from the injured list, which could be as early as next week. It’ll be veteran Emmanuel Rivera drawing a start at the hot corner on Wednesday night.
