With Jake Meyers returning from the injured list on Saturday, there simply was no longer room available for Melton on the team’s bench. The 24-year-old outfielder has hit .149/.219/.179 with zero homers, seven RBI and six stolen bases in 74 plate appearances at the big league level this season.

The Astros designated Cooper Hummel for assignment on Monday to free up a spot on their 40-man roster for the return of Cristian Javier. That also opened up a spot on the Astros’ bench for Melton to return. The 24-year-old outfielder has hit just .206 (7-for-34) with zero homers, six RBI and three stolen bases in 37 plate appearances with the Astros this season. He’s unlikely to see enough action to gain relevance from a fantasy perspective.

Melton, 24, will head back to Sugar Land after Jesus Sanchez landed in Houston in a deal with the Marlins. The outfielder has some long-term upside, but isn’t likely to carve out a fantasy role in the foreseeable future.

Melton returns to Houston’s outfield mix, starting in center field and batting fifth in Monday’s series opener against the Nationals. The 24-year-old top prospect has been on the shelf since mid-June due to a sprained right ankle. He’s held his own at the outset of his big-league career, batting .241 (7-for-29) with one homer, six RBI and three steals through 11 games.

Melton’s four balls in play last night ranged from 99.9 mph to 111.7 mph. He’s been on the shelf for about six weeks now with a sprained right ankle. It was unfortunately timed, since with Jake Meyers down, he’d probably be playing regularly for Houston right now if healthy.

Melton suffered the injury during Friday night’s contest against the Twins. No word yet on the severity of the sprain, but the 24-year-old outfielder is going to miss a couple of weeks at a minimum. Cooper Hummel was promoted from Triple-A Sugar Land to take his place on the Astros’ active roster.

Astros’ skipper Joe Espada called it a “pretty good” sprain after the game and noted that they’ll know more after he undergoes testing. Expect the club to provide another update on his status prior to Saturday’s ballgame.

Melton delivered a two-out, RBI single off of Chris Paddack in the opening inning that extended the Astros’ early advantage to 3-0. He then smacked a two-run triple off of the Twins’ right-hander in the third and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mauricio Dubon. The 24-year-old outfielder has held his own in his limited action thus far, slashing .241/.290/.310 with zero homers, six RBI, three stolen bases and a 12/2 K/BB ratio across his first 31 plate appearances.

The 24-year-old rookie outfielder smacked a two-out, two-run single off of Mitch Keller in the fourth inning that extended the Astros’ lead to 4-2. He then swiped second base but was left stranded there. Melton also led off the seventh inning with a single and scored on an RBI double by Jeremy Peña. With the two-hit attack, Melton is now 3-for-12 (.250) in his limited action with the Astros. Hopefully this strong performance will start to earn him additional at-bats going forward.
