Rodriguez is a 17-year-old that the A’s signed a year ago. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Mets are giving the A’s $5.75 million of the $15.75 million that McNeil is owed next year and will also cover his $2 million buyout on his $15.75 million option for 2027, assuming that it’s not exercised. McNeil, who was cast aside in favor of Marcus Semien in New York, figures to take over at second for the A’s, who previously tried to sign Ha-Seong Kim for that spot. Zack Gelof will get to battle Max Muncy and others for the third base job, assuming that the A’s also don’t fill that spot with a veteran.

Healey, who covered the Mets before jumping to the Red Sox in the middle of the season, said one option being discussed in signing Paul Goldschmidt. McNeil is also an option in left field for the Mets after being bumped off second base by the Marcus Semien acquisition. He’s also been mentioned as a trade candidate.

This doesn’t necessarily rule McNeil out for the 2026 Mets, given that he could simply take over for Nimmo in left field, but the team’s goal here appears to be improving the defense and getting more athletic. Trading McNeil seems like an obvious next move for the Mets, and there should be teams interested in acquiring him as a second baseman or an outfielder. He’s due $15.75 million next season, and his contract includes a club option for 2027 at $15.75 million with a $2 million buyout. He’d also get an extra $500,000 upon being traded.

It’s the better of the two kinds of thoracic outlet surgery, so McNeil is already recovering well and is expected to be ready for spring training. There’s been some talk that the Mets might look to move him this winter, but he can be penciled in as the primary second baseman for now.

McNeil has a been a .700-OPS guy for three months now, and in spite of that first-half power surge, he’s mustered only 53 RBI through 117 games as a middle-of-the-order hitter. It’s still been a solid enough season on the whole, but he’s been a problem for the Mets of late.

McNeil will take a seat in this one with left-hander Andrew Alvarez toeing the slab for the Nationals. Brett Baty will start in his place at second base and will bat eighth for the Mets on Friday evening in New York.

McNeil delivered a run-scoring single in the fourth inning that tied the game at 2-2. He then rode home on Luis Torrens’ three-run blast. He then singled in the sixth inning and swiped third base but was ultimately stranded there. The 33-year-old also added a two-run single in the seventh that made it a 10-2 ballgame. With his three-hit attack, McNeil is now hitting .264/.353/.458 with 12 homers, 50 RBI and three stolen bases across 386 plate appearances.

If you’re going to get a breather, getting a night off against Paul Skenes isn’t the worst thing in the world. Brett Baty will cover second base for the Mets on Friday night while Tyrone Taylor draws a start in center field and will bat eighth.

The Mets’ only runs through six came on McNeil’s three-run homer off Cal Quantrill in the third. They then scored four times in the seventh and twice in the ninth to make it a laugher. McNeil hit two homers for the second time this year and fourth time in his career. He also matched his high with four RBI, which he’d done just twice previously. He’s back up to .261/.351/.462 for the year after slumping in the first half of August.

McNeil came off the bench to pinch-hit during Thursday’s series finale against the Nationals, but he’s going to get some additional time off to rest a lingering shoulder issue that’s been bothering him for the past week. It’ll be Brett Baty sliding over to cover second base with Mark Vientos handling the hot corner for the third straight contest.

McNeil took Jackson Rutledge deep in the ninth for his first homer since July 4. It was his 10h homer in 336 plate appearances this season and the 14th surrendered by Rutledge, leaving him tied with ex-Blue Jay Chad Green for the most among all relievers.

McNeil transformed a two-run lead into a four-run advantage with a clutch two-out, two-run single off of Dylan Dodd in the seventh inning. That would be his only hit in three at-bats on the evening. For the season, the versatile 33-year-old is now hitting .255/.344/.490 with eight homers, 26 RBI and one stolen base in his first 183 plate appearances.

McNeil swatted a homer with two runners on off Mike Soroka in the first inning. The second baseman has been a solid power threat since returning to the New York lineup with seven homers and a .548 slugging percentage. He’s also driven in 22 runs, and hitting behind the quality top of the Mets’ lineup should allow that number to continue to grow — assuming he keeps hitting, of course.

McNeil has hit three of his six homers the last two days. His exit velocity numbers aren’t any better than usual this year, but he’s pulling the ball more frequently and also striking out less than ever. It’s led to an excellent .257/.355/.533 line so far. That .276 isolated slugging percentage is more than twice as high as his .125 mark over the previous three years. Alas, while things are definitely looking up here, McNeil unfortunately does not have any games remaining against the Rockies.

The triple should have been a single, but Alex Call made a flailing dive at it and watched it roll by him. McNeil’s homer was more impressive, traveling a projected 420 feet to right-center. Barring a correction, that’s the farthest he’s hit a ball since 2019. He topped out at 402 feet last year and 400 feet in 2023.

McNeil got the nod at second base on Friday night in his return from the injured list, so it’s notable that he’s shifted to the outfield in order to accommodate youngster Luisangel Acuña at the keystone.

As anticipated, McNeil will be back in uniform with the Mets for their weekend series against the Nationals in Washington. The 33-year-old went 11-for-28 (.393) with a pair of homers and three RBI on his minor league rehab assignment. He should see regular action for the Mets against right-handed pitching.

McNeil started in center field and batted leadoff. He should play for Syracuse again on Thursday before being activated for the Mets on Friday in Washington. Where the Mets play him is the better question. McNeil has played some center field on the rehab assignment, but is he good enough to play there regularly in the major leagues? If not, will the Mets stick him back at second base and push both Brett Baty and Luisangel Acuna to the bench? The best bet is likely that McNeil stays at second and Acuna plays a couple of games a week and gets work as a pinch runner and defensive replacement.

McNeil has split time between several defensive spots on his rehab assignment and appears close to rejoining New York’s mix, most likely in a versatile utility role, in the coming days.

The Mets want to have the option while Jose Siri is out, but it’s hard to see McNeil, who graded out as an average corner outfielder last year, being a good fit in center field, especially next to Juan Soto, who is limited defensively. The most likely outcome is that the Mets need to get McNeil at-bats at second base at the expense of Brett Baty and Luisangel Acuna.
