After getting a pair of scoreless frames from Will Vest in the ninth and 10th, the Tigers turned to Montero to close it out — despite the 25-year-old hurler having never logged a save in his career. He showed no fear, getting Randy Arozarena on a bouncer to third and Cal Raleigh on a pop out to third base to start the inning. He then allowed a two-out single to Julio Rodríguez before retiring Josh Naylor on strikes to deliver the Tigers on a ground out to first base to end it — stealing Game 1 from the Mariners in Seattle.

The 25-year-old hurler racked up seven strikeouts on the day and didn’t walk a batter. The only blemish on his afternoon came on a two-out RBI single off the bat of Nick Sogard in the second inning. Montero got seven whiffs on 76 pitches on the day, registering a CSW of 32 percent. He wraps up the 2025 season with a 4.37 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and a 72/31 K/BB ratio across 90 2/3 innings in 20 appearances (12 starts) with the Tigers.

Montero served up only two hits in the abbreviated outing, but both wound up leaving the yard courtesy of Drake Baldwin and Nacho Alvarez Jr. He struggled to throw strikes in this one, handing out four free passes and finishing with only two strikeouts. He’s likely to make another start next week before the regular season wraps up, but that hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.

José Urquidy, Tommy Kahnle and Will Vest finished the shutout. Montero pitched in relief in his last three appearances, including having thrown 1 2/3 innings just three days ago, so it was pretty surprising that he got through five today. Of course, the matchup helped. With Sawyer-Gipson Long out of the mix, Montero could start again or serve as a bulk guy versus the Braves next weekend. He might be a streaming option then.

The expectation is that Jose Urquidy will then follow him in a bulk relief role. Montero has underwhelmed in his time with the Tigers this season, posting a 4.60 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and a 58/27 K/BB ratio over 78 1/3 innings of work.

Montero has been shipped back to the minors after getting obliterated fro six runs over four innings on Friday in a loss to the Blue Jays. The 25-year-old righty has mostly held his own this season at the highest level, but the Tigers would certainly like to find an experienced veteran to take his roster spot at next week’s trade deadline.

The 25-year-old right-hander struck out three batters on the night and didn’t walk a batter. He kept the Jays off the board until the fourth inning where Addison Barger smacked an RBI double and scored on an error. Montero then returned for the fifth and allowed four straight hits — including a pair of RBI doubles — before mercifully turning the ball over to the bullpen. He got 10 swings and misses on 76 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 29 percent. We’ll see if he manages to stick around to make another start next week or if the Tigers will send him back to Triple-A Toledo to work through his issues.

After a scoreless first inning, Montero put two runners on with a hit and a walk in the second for Rowdy Tellez, who took him deep for a three-run blast to put the Rangers on the board. Montero allowed one more run in the fifth on a walk and two hits before he was relieved with one out in the inning. He struck out five. The 25-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 4.28 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and a 50/25 K/BB ratio across 69 1/3 innings. Montero lines up for a matchup against the Blue Jays in Detroit on Thursday.

Montero limited Tampa Bay’s strong lineup to just four hits with a run-scoring single from Jonathan Aranda in the third inning representing the lone tally against him. He struck out four and only handed out one free pass. It’s unclear whether he’ll get another turn in Detroit’s rotation later this week, but he would be in line to face the Mariners on Sunday to close out the first half.

Montero last pitched for the Tigers on June 19, throwing five innings of one-run ball against the Pirates. He’ll likely just be up for tonight’s game and then return to Triple-A.

Montero was terrific in a no-decision against the Pirates during the second game of Thursday’s doubleheader, giving up just one run on three hits over five innings. The Tigers needed a fresh arm for their bullpen on Friday which is why Montero was sent down. Expect him to return in short order the next time the team requires an extra starter.

Montero punched out five batters on the evening while issuing a pair of walks. He came on in the second inning after Tyler Holton had put the Tigers in an early 3-0 hole, then did his best to keep his club in the game for the remainder of the evening. The lone blemish on his day came on a solo shot off the bat of Andrew McCutchen in the third inning. The 24-year-old right-hander got six whiffs on 77 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 26 percent. He’ll carry a 4.02 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and a 39/20 K/BB ratio (56 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Athletics.

The 24-year-old hurler struck out four batters on the night while issuing one base on balls. All of the scoring done against him came via the long ball, as TJ Friedl swatted a solo shot in the third inning and Elly De La Cruz added a solo blast in the fifth inning. Montero got six swings and misses on 83 pitches in the ballgame, posting a CSW of 28 percent. On the season, he now sports a 3-1 ERA, 4.24 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and a 34/18 K/BB ratio over 51 innings through his first 10 outings. He’ll do battle against the Pirates his next time out at home on Thursday and could make for a viable streaming option in deeper mixed leagues.

Brant Hurter will be the opener for Friday’s game. Montero worked behind an opener in his last outing as well, and it’s a way to keep the 24-year-old from seeing the Cincinnati lineup face the right-hander multiple times. He still has a chance to qualify for a win with the bulk assignment, but there are better streaming options for Friday’s slate.

Montero gave up a two-run homer to Michael Busch in the fifth and then solo shots to Pete Crow-Armstrong and Matt Shaw before being pulled in the seventh. Besides those, he allowed just one other hard-hit ball and two extremely soft singles (one was a popped up bunt). Still, three homers are tough to overcome. Montero figures to stick around for now and face the Reds next week, though he could again work behind an opener.

The right-hander allowed seven hits on the day while walking walking one and striking out two. One out away from qualifying for a victory, Montero was lifted after allowing a two-out double to Bobby Witt Jr. in the fifth inning as manager A.J. Hinch wanted left-hander Tyler Holton to face Vinnie Pasquantino with the tying run in scoring position. Montero got seven swings and misses on 72 pitches in the contest, posting a CSW of 29 percent. He now holds a 4.02 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and a 26/16 K/BB ratio over 40 1/3 innings in eight appearances (six starts) for the Tigers this season. He’s in line to take the ball again on Friday against the Cubs.

Montero allowed one hit, walked two and struck out three. He got to start today after pitching behind an opener his last two times out. That the opener didn’t work out last time likely played a role, but so did the fact that the Giants just don’t have a very imposing top of the lineup. It’s the first time in seven big-league appearances this season that Montero has put exclusively zeroes on the board, and he improved to 2-1 with a 4.54 ERA in 35 2/3 innings. It’s likely that he’ll start again Sunday against the Royals.

Montero was forced to enter during the first after Sean Guenther struggled as an opener. He limited the damage that inning, but he faltered afterwards in what turned out to be an 11-4 loss. Montero now has a 5.28 ERA over 30 2/3 innings in his six appearances this season. He’ll likely head back to Triple-A after with Casey Mize set to return.

The 24-year-old right-hander walked three batters while striking out two in the ballgame. the only run that scored against him came as Owen Miller drove in a run with a fielder’s choice in the second inning. Montero has been the guy the Tigers rely on anytime they have a doubleheader or need to give their starters an extra day of rest, and so far that has led to him posting a 4.15 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and a 15/10 K/BB ratio over 21 2/3 innings in his first four starts. He should get another opportunity at some point in the next couple of weeks.

No surprise. Montero will get the ball against the Orioles after being selected as the 27th player for the twin-billing against the Tigers. The right-hander is stretched out enough to work deep, but it’d be a risky streaming option against the quality Baltimore lineup.

There’s a chance Montero takes the ball for the nightcap of Saturday’s twin bill at Comerica Park. However, that depends whether he’s needed to pitch in relief during the opening contest. We’re assuming that rookie Jackson Jobe isn’t an option this weekend for workload reasons, so it’ll likely be a bullpen game on Saturday night. Regardless, it’s a situation that fantasy managers should make an effort to avoid entirely.

Montero had a 6-2 lead to work with after three, but he walked four and failed to last long enough to get the win. This leaves him with a 7.71 ERA in his two spot starts over the last week. He’ll likely return to Triple-A now.

The widely-held assumption was that Montero would return to Triple-A Toledo after allowing five runs on Wednesday in a spot start against the Brewers. That’s no longer the case. The Tigers are rolling with a six-man rotation for at least another turn with Montero taking the ball on Monday against the Padres.

Montero struck out eight, but he also gave up homers to Christian Yelich, Rhys Hoskins and Sal Frelick. The last of those led off the sixth inning, and it’s really hard to say why Montero was still in at that point with the Tigers pen well rested. Montero should head back to Triple-A now.

Everyone else is healthy in Detroit’s rotation. Montero will come up to take the ball for Wednesday’s series finale in Milwaukee to build in an extra rest for the other starters. It’ll be Reese Olson taking the ball on Thursday against the Royals on an extra day of rest.
