This isn’t a huge surprise if you’ve been tracking Marte’s playing time, but it is pretty big news considering where he was going in fantasy drafts. The 24-year-old is hitting just .138/.194/.138 in 11 games with a 10/2 K/BB ratio. He has played league-average defense in the outfield, which is a small win, but not one that seemed to matter enough for the Reds. He will head down to Triple-A to try to rein in some of his over-aggressive tendencies and figure out why he is pounding the ball into the ground so much to begin the season.

Marte has started just three times in five contests to open the season, which is a bit perplexing considering how he finished last year as one of Cincinnati’s core offensive contributors. It’s notable that he’s in the lineup to face Pirates right-hander Bubba Chandler in this one. The 24-year-old former top prospect will continue splitting time with Will Benson, who is in left field on Tuesday night with Spencer Steer on the bench. The emergence of Sal Stewart and return of Eugenio Suárez has created a logjam for the Reds with Marte drawing the short straw for now.

Marte has now sat against both righties the Reds have faced this season, which is a bit confusing considering he had reverse splits last year. To start the year, it seems like Will Benson will be starting against right-handed pitchers, which makes it hard to roster Marte in shallower formats right now, especially considering the Reds are set to face right-handed starters in eight of their next nine games.

It’s kind of funny that after specifically taking issue with Marte’s troubles hitting against lefties last year, manager Terry Francona lifted him against a right-hander today. It was Will Benson stepping in, so that’s not a bad switch. Benson, though, should have been starting over Spencer Steer in the first place, and he went on to strike out anyway. Marte’s strikeouts today both came against Garrett Crochet, so they probably shouldn’t be held against him. Sal Stewart excepted, no one else in the Reds lineup did anything, either.

There was a little speculation that the Reds might send down Marte in order to open up time for others, but he’s set to return to his spot as the team’s everyday right fielder. The 15/1 K/BB this spring is ugly, but he’s hit .255 and slugged .569 with his four homers and four doubles. A 20/20 season is possible, though he hasn’t attempted a steal this spring after going 10-for-13 in his 90 major league games last year.

Marte’s homer off lefty Kolby Allard was a 109-foot rocket to left-center. Marte was bad against lefties last year and the Reds have made judgments about him because of it, but he shouldn’t have any playing time concerns initially. He’s slugging .600 with his three homers and four doubles this spring.

Francona seems committed to keeping TJ Friedl first and Elly De La Cruz third ahead of new cleanup man Eugenio Suárez. That means the No. 2 hitter pretty much has to be a righty. Marte is one, but he hit just .232/.288/.274 against lefties last season, compared to .275/.305/.516 against righties. There isn’t much reason to think that’s something that will stick going forward, but it might mean Marte hits fifth or sixth going forward. Sal Stewart seems like the best alternative to Marte, but it’ll probably take Francona some time to warm up to that idea. Matt McLain might get his old spot back if he has a nice spring.

Even though Marte tried to pace himself on Bryan Reynolds’ high fly to right in the ninth, he still got to the wall too early and left himself with little momentum for making a jumping catch. Fortunately, he was able to pull it off anyway, denying Reynolds’ 348-foot fly. He also knocked in the Reds’ first run of the game and scored their second in the fifth.

The second spot in the Cincinnati lineup just seems cursed this season; all five Reds to make more than a few starts there have considerably worse numbers batting second than they do hitting elsewhere (the other four being Matt McLain, Gavin Lux, Spencer Steer and Santiago Espinal). Marte is hitting .233 with 33 strikeouts in 24 games batting second and .286 with 44 strikeouts in his remaining 61 games. For the season, Reds No. 2 hitters have a .612 OPS, compared to .729 for their No. 9 hitters.

Marte had started each of the team’s last five games, so this appears to be just a routine night off for the dynamic 23-year-old. Will Benson will slide over to cover right field while Austin Hays will start in left field and bat third for the Reds against Cubs’ right-hander Colin Rea.

It’s the second time in the Reds’ last three contests that the slumping Marte has found himself on the Reds’ bench. Will Benson will start in his place in right field and bat sixth for the Reds against J.T. Ginn and the Athletics on Friday evening in West Sacramento.

Marte put his special power on display here with a mammoth 444 foot home run – the longest of his young career – in the first inning off Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore. He hit that ball 108.9 mph and chipped in another line drive at 103.6 mph later. On the flip side, he came to the plate as the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, fell behind 0-2, and hit a lazy fly ball. Nevertheless, he’s hit 12 home runs in just 65 games this season with an .859 OPS.

Marte had one of just two hits for the Reds off Shohei Ohtani, and it was responsible for the only run Cincinnati scored with that solo blast. The 23-year-old has hit 11 homers while hitting an impressive .292 with an OPS of .845.

Marte will make his first appearance in center field on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium with TJ Friedl getting a rare night off. The 23-year-old former top prospect came up as an infielder, but has made the successful transition to the outfield over the last few months, looking like one of Cincinnati’s core foundational pieces to build around long-term.

Marte hit a little league home run in the sixth inning — smacking a triple to center field and scoring as there was an overthrow at third base — tying the game at one run apiece. He also sparked a five-run rally in the eighth inning with a leadoff single and he scored on an RBI single off the bat of Austin Hays. The 23-year-old infielder has been outstanding for the Reds this season, slashing .300/.338/.518 with 10 homers, 40 RBI and seven stolen bases in his first 234 plate appearances.

It’s a well-earned promotion for Marte, who connected for his 10th home run of the season during Tuesday’s victory. The 23-year-old former top prospect is hitting .362 (21-for-58) with three homers, 11 RBI and one steal over his last 15 contests. He’s looked like a potential long-term building block for Cincinnati over the last few months.

Marte took Kyle Hendricks deep for a solo homer in the second inning to put the Reds on the board. He followed with a double in the fourth to drive in a run. The 23-year-old is up to 10 homers, 39 RBI, and seven steals while slashing .302/.336/.527 across 217 plate appearances.

Marte’s 427-foot homer off Cam Sanders in the ninth put the game away after the Pirates scored three runs to make it a 9-8 game in the eighth. His double was also cranked at 108.1 mph over Tommy Pham’s head in left and might have plated a second run had it not bounced over the fence. Marte has four doubles the last two days after collecting three in Saturday’s 2-1 win. He’s been displaced from third base by the Ke’Bryan Hayes acquisition, but there’s no taking him out of the lineup right now.

Marte was responsible for both of Cincinnati’s runs in their 2-1 victory over the Pirates. He doubled in one run in the fourth to put the Reds on the board, then doubled again in the seventh before scoring on a sacrifice fly. The 23-year-old is hitting .277/.320/.482 with seven homers and seven steals across 178 plate appearances.

It’s happening. Marte will make his first career start in the outfield at Citi Field on Sunday afternoon as he adds some additional defensive versatility to his game. The 23-year-old former top prospect, who has been taking defensive reps in the outfield recently, came up through the minors as a shortstop and has played mostly third base for Cincinnati the last two seasons. He’s been excellent at the plate this season, hitting .272/.327/.515 with six homers, 23 RBI and five steals in 30 games.

Marte took Tyler Kinley deep for a solo homer in the seventh inning to cut the Rockies lead to one run for his only hit of the game. The 23-year-old has started eight of the last nine games at third base and is hitting .293/.340/.565 with six homers, 22 RBI, and four steals across 100 plate appearances.

Marte had gone just 1-for-12 since returning from a two-month hiatus with a hamstring strain heading into this game. That’s nothing a date with this version of Sandy Alcantara can’t fix though, as Marte destroyed a 421 foot bomb off the struggling right-hander here and had another hard-hit single in his next at-bat. He was on fire when he originally went on the injured list, so here’s to hoping he can rediscover some of that momentum.

Marte, who hit .333 with two homers and just one strikeout during a nine-game rehab assignment, is back two months after suffering a strained oblique. The Reds have him starting at third base and batting seventh today. His return should result in far less playing time for Santiago Espinal, but Espinal is starting at second with Matt McLain DHing today. Christian Encarnacion-Strand could also lose some at-bats. Marte should be worth playing in mixed leagues; he was batting .294/.342/.515 with three homers and four steals in 19 games before getting hurt.

Marte also played the whole game at third base, which is a positive step in his recovery from a hamstring injury. It would seem that the 23-year-old is close to being ready to return to the Reds’ lineup. Given how much success he was having before landing on the injured list, it seems likely that he takes back the regular 3B role, which could be bad news for Christian Encarnacion-Strand, who is hitting just .202/..230/.361 on the season with five home runs in 33 games.

With Jeimer Candelario no longer in the Reds organization, there is one fewer corner infield bat to compete for playing time with, but Marte will still have to fight for playing time with Santiago Espinal, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and Gavin Lux. That makes it hard to stash him in fantasy leagues until we know what kind of role he’s returning to.

Marte hit the shelf back in early May with a Grade 2 left oblique strain and has finally progressed to getting back into game action. The 23-year-old showed some real promise with the Reds prior to getting hurt, which makes him intriguing in deeper mixed leagues. He’ll likely rejoin Cincinnati’s infield mix before the end of June or early July.

Not good. Reds manager Terry Francona didn’t have an exact timetable for Marte’s return saying only that he’s going to be out a little while. Fantasy managers should anticipate a multi-week absence since return timelines for Grade 2 strains typically fall in the 4-8 week range. It’s remarkable that the 23-year-old former prospect was able to play through the issue the last few weeks before finally being shut down. There should be a clearer return timetable at some point in the near future, but he’s facing an extended shutdown.

Marte will miss a week-plus — at minimum — while recovering from the strain. The former top prospect should be back by the end of May if there are no setbacks at the latest, but oblique strains can have a wide variety of timelines depending on the severity. Rece Hinds is heading up from Louisville to take Marte’s roster spot.

Reds manager Terry Francona told reporters Marte has been playing through a lingering left side issue for the last couple weeks stemming from a hit by pitch earlier this season while playing at Triple-A Louisville. It doesn’t sound like a massive concern, but the Reds don’t want to take any chances here, which is why he was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup. There should be some clarity on his status at some point in the coming days once Marte undergoes imaging to determine whether he’s dealing with anything serious. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now.
